Answer:

A Date with the President
– By Gautam Abhilash

Stepping into the Rashtrapati Bhavan, talking to the President and dining with him, might be something that most of us can only dream about. But on February 24, 2006 our dreams were realised and we were invited by DrAP.J. Abdul Kalam to the Rashtrapati Bhavan. We were accompanied by Mrs. Namrata Gakhar and Mrs. S.S. Gupta. Our day started early in the morning at eight o’clock when we were asked to be present at India Gate. From there, two buses took us to the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

After a few security checks we entered the portals of the residence of India’s First Citizen. The lobby was truly impressive with the portraits of all the past Presidents. We got a chance to meet the family members of Dr. Kalam.

Next, we saw the Mughal Gardens. Finally we were taken to the Ashoka Hall. We were spell bound by the beautiful paintings some of which had not been given a face-lift since the establishment of the building but still looked magnificent as if they were set up yesterday. The ceiling had an oval centerpiece made of camel skin and the carpets were from Persia that were brought and installed in 1920 and were still intact.

Later, we interacted with Dr. Kalam and he told us that if we want to hold the same position as he does, the only way to do it is to ‘sweat’ which means ‘to work hard’. After having answered all the questions of the children, he shared with us his 10 point programme for the youth of Inida. He made us take a pledge to work for the progress, unity and integrity of the nation. We felt so honoured when he joined us for lunch. Dr. Kalam’s simplicity and his philosophy completely mesmerised us.

I request you to publish my letter in protest against the playing of loudspeakers during nights.

It is a well known fact that for each and every religious or family function, loud speakers are played. They are played throughout the day as well as the night. They cause a lot of nuisance. They create noise pollution. They do not allow students to concentrate on their studies and sick people to have some sleep. We are horrified at this nuisance.

It is time that the Police Department took steps in this regard and stop the playing of loudspeakers indiscriminately. I hope all will agree with me.

It remains closed for days together. Whenever we ask for sugar and kerosene, the dealer says that the stocks have been exhausted. His way of dealing with customers is not good. He does not display the stock position on the board.
Hence I request you to see that the shop is kept open during the specified hours. Please instruct your Deputy Tahasildar to take early action in this regard.

I shall be thankful if you publish my letter in your daily. The matter is of public safety and concern.

Ours is a newly formed colony with scattered houses. The frequent thefts are causing us a lot of worry. On 10th of this month, the house of an Assistant Engineer was looted when the inmates went to Yadadri. The same night some thieves entered the house of a retired railway employee. The members of the family went to attend a marriage function in Nizamabad.

Yesterday the thieves entered the Ramalaym temple and took away the idol – jewels worth about one lakh. These reports were lodged with the police. So far no clue has been detected regarding the thefts.

I am a resident of Gandhinagar. Through this letter I want to bring to the notice of the authorities concerned and the young boys towards eve-teasing girl students in public places.

Yesterday when I was waiting for a bus, I found a group of college boys teasing the girl students at the bus stop. They heckled and jeered at the girls. When I tried to warn them, they spoke to me in a rude manner. But luckily some good people came to my rescue. They sent the boys away.

I request the police authorities to take severe action against the eve-teasers. Police in mufti can check this type of misbehaviour to certain extent. Young college boys should treat the girl students as their sisters. Then only such incidents can be averted.

Lions and tigers are trapped to perform certain tricks in circus. The cruelty of man towards animals is going unchecked.

People should realise that the animals are also living creatures. They cannot be ill treated and tortured. Please enlighten the public regarding this crulety towards animals.

Question 1.
Write an essay on the following topic : “A Visit to an Exhibition”
Answer:

A VISIT TO AN EXHIBITION

Today’s exhibitions do not provide the same educative values rendered by them a few years ago. This is the feeling one gets after going round the different stalls. It would be apparent that the colourful arrangements at the various stalls are only to earn money and not to provide food for thought to the visitors.

At a recent exhibition, the section on silk sarees manufactured at Arni and Kanchi, did not provide any information on the various weaves or types of sarees, rather they catered to the affluent visitors who were given a warm reception with a soft drink ! The object was to encourage them to buy the sarees at the stall. In another section dealing in generators and other electrical items that come to use during power failures, a man was found explaining the reasons for power cuts. He showed no enthusiasm and salesmanship in his work. When he explained the measures to be adopted during such emergencies, one of the listeners informed him that his village still remains to be electrified.

There was a long queue before a small counter of a large tent. Enquiries revealed that some oriental dancers were in progress. No wonder there was such a huge queue before it! Next to this tent, a man was seen bargaining with a coir merchant to push the sales of the product he was exhibiting. The next tent was an unusually big one. At its well decorated entrance, one received a warm welcome by two smartly dressed young ladies. In the main hall, a well dressed man who looked to be an engineer was explaining to a dhoti clad visitor from northern India about the progress their company had registered in the past two years in the manufacture of scooters. The visitor was the Minister for Industries, Government of Telangana.

The next stall belonged to M/s Parry and Company. Here the visitors were given a truly sweet welcome with sweets manufactured and packed by an automatic machine ! Needless to say that it was the most popular of all the stalls. None left without spending at least ten minutes watching the manufacture of toffees right before their eyes ! Around 12 noon when we came out out of the exhibition, we had bought a book on Russia that cost just three rupees.

Question 2.
Write an essay on the following topic : “Improvement of Elementary Schools”.
Answer:

IMPROVEMENT OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

In spite of the fact that no village in India is without an elementary school, the students who come out of these schools are not in a position to compete with English medium school students or with others who have had their education in private schools in towns and cities. When the elementary education which is the very foundation of one’s education itself is very weak, there can be no concrete superstructure.

In rural India the parents are unable to send their children to elementary schools at the age of five owing to grinding poverty. Even otherwise, the quality of instruction and the infrastructure is far from satisfactory. This stands in the way of sound education. Therefore, the Government must make an introspection to improve the quality of elementary education in the rural areas. There should not be a problem if the government is sincere about raising the standard of education in the villages.

It is imperative to construct strong buildings with all facilities, especially blackboards and furniture and separate toilets for boys and girls. It is well known that in rural elementary schools the number of teachers fall far short of the requirements. A teacher has to look after three or four classes at a time. Hence it is impossible to pay individual attention to the growing children which is necessary at the elementary level. The students in their tender age must be taught with models as envisaged by the Montessori system. This not only adds colour to teaching but also draws the attention of the children towards the lessons being taught. The recent proposal to start toy banks in schools is a commendable effort.

All said and done, the playground facilities must receive special attention. Well, in rural India space is no problem but the facilities and sports equipments are nowhere to be seen. There can be no sound education without a sound body. Sports have become an instrument of national pride in the international sphere. Hence, the students at the elementary stage must be given training in various disciplines of sports. This will certainly contribute to enhance the sports standards of our country. The ‘Basic Education’ as advocated by Gandhiji has a lot to do with elementary schooling with special emphasis in vocational training.

Agrarian based industries like rural crafts and even developing flower buds should be encouraged. In the process the rural youth may find gainful occupation in places of their birth and help in developing the villages they live in. It will also help reverse the exodus of unemployed youth into the already extended city problems. The implementation of these suggestions should be taken seriously by powers to realise the dream of our funding fathers.

Question 3.
Write an essay on the following topic : “Your Visit to a Historical Place”
Answer:

MY VISIT TO A HISTORICAL PLACE

One reads much about the achievements of rulers and about the structures and monuments which they had erected in memory of some events in their lives or in memory of thew beloved ooes. Ooe such monument was. built by Akbar m Fatehpur Sikhri near Delhi. On my recent visit to Delhi in May, to stay with my uncle, I had an occasion to visit that place. A guide explained in a lucid manner all the events connected with that ancient city. He enlightened me that Akbar had laid the foundation stone to the new city in honour of Salim Christ in 1569. It is believed that many magnificent buildings were constructed during the next twelve years.

The ‘Jama Masjid’ and the ‘Buland Darwaza’ are very famous. They reflect the synthesis of the Persian and Indian architecture. The Buland Darwaza was built in 1602 to commemorate the conquest of the Deccan by Akbar. It is said that the Buland Darwaza is the highest gateway in India and one among the highest in the world.

The Jama Masjid is described as the glory of Fatehpur. At the Jama Masjid we were pleasantly surprised to know about the ‘wish-tags’ that were sold there. There is a belief that one’s wish would be fulfilled if a tag is tied on one of the windows there. Naturally, 1 bought a tag for a rupee and tied it firmly wishing that I may be employed in the Indian Army in the near future !

Some of the more prominent buildings of Fatehpur are the House of Birbal, the House of the princess of Amber and the Diwan-i-Khas. The guide also showed a pillar which eloquently spoke of the synthesis of the Hindu, Muslim, Jain and Buddhist architecture. It is an ample testimony that Akbar had equal concern and respect for all religions. The buildings inside the fort of Fatehpur known as Panch Mahal also represent the fusion of Hindu-Muslim architecture. At the end of the conducted tour I enjoyed Delhi’s favourite drink ‘lassi’ as much as the past history of this ancient day.

Question 4.
Write an essay on the following topic : “Your School Anniverssary”
Answer:

MY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY

Usually my school anniversary is held in the month of November so that both the students and teachers can devote their entire time to make the celebrations a complete success. But this year, due to unforeseen circumstances it was held in the month of February. Though all the team events had already been completed in January, only the athletics competition was kept aside for the Anniversary day. Half of the day was completely devoted to these thrilling events. The festive fever was at its peak in my school.

The kick-off all began with the previous year’s school champion carrying the torch escorted by two athletes on motor cycles. Adding colour to the occasion people from the nearby villages had gathered in large numbers to witness the anniversary celebrations of the school. The nearest village was as near as one kilometer from the school. Although our school is situated in the rural area, its strength exceeds, 1000.

The guest of honour was Minister of Education, Government of Telangana who had been invited to preside over the function arrived at 4 p.m. He was received by the correspondent and the principal of the school and immediately escorted to the rostrum. Welcoming the gathering, the headmaster of our school read out the annual report of the school. During the’ course of his speech he declared that one of our school boys had secured 10 points in SSC examination conducted last year, there was a thunderous applause from amidst the students and teachers. At the end of the speech the Education Minister wished to meet the boy.

Once again the students rose up and clapped for a long time. Prizes were distributed to the meritorious students by the honourable minister. Later he gave a short speech which was highly instructive. He stressed the need for the student community to keep away from politics and strikes as they harm both the students and the country. He exhorted the parents to instil sense of duty and discipline in the minds of their wards. Booklets containing minister’s speech were distributed to all. A two-hour concert was staged to entertain the gathering. The function came to an end at 6 o’ clock when our English teacher proposed a vote of thanks. One of the highlights of the function was the drama in which both students and teachers participated. The minister and all those who attended the function were thrilled.

Question 5.
Write an essay on the following topic : “Child Labour in India”
Answer:

CHILD LABOUR IN INDIA

India has more child workers than any other country in the word. This incidence is increasing day by day. In our country, one-third of the houses have a working child and one-fourth of the children in the age group 5-15 are employed. Over twenty percent of the country’s GNP is the contribution of child labour. According to a rough estimate, there are around 50 million child labourers in India. Such children are deprived of much needed love of their parents. They are denied opportunities for growth, development, learning, etc. They are subjected to hard labour with meagre wages. As they have no legislature or union, demands for better facilities on wage- hike cannot be raised by them.

Hard labour for long hours mars the children’s world of imagination. It kills their creativity by pushing them into a mechanised way of life. Their tender mind and tiny limbs cannot withstand the work-load they are subjected to. The result would be disastrous. Soon, they start suffering from diseases such as asthma, tuberculosis, skin problems, etc. besides they are more and more likely to lose one of their limbs or both while working. Some child workers take even country liquor, opium, marijuana and other drugs to get rid of exhaustion. Their disturbed childhood also tempts to indulge in crimes. Sexual perversions are also witnessed among them.

We have to act rapidly to melt away this serious problem. The ultimate objective of any sane society should be the abolition of child labour. Our Indian Government prohibits the employment of children in hazardous jobs.

The west may save its conscience by banning carpet imports from India only because of the tender hands that have suffered in making them. But, we have to think practically also about the plight of the children. If they are suddenly deprived of their livelihood, a viable social security scheme endorsed by legislation only will be to their rescue.

Soon the drum made of tamarind wood was ready. The courtiers assembled outside the king’s door and the royal musician began to play. But instead of the thum thum that everyone expected, the Tamarind drum intoned, The raja has horns on his head. The raja has horns on his head.’ The court burst out laughing and the king cried with rage.

‘I won’t stay in the palace a moment longer,’ he shouted. ‘I’ll go to the forest and live by myself.’ He tore the night cap off his head and ran out of the palace, seizing the Tamarind drum on his way out.

The king lived for several years in the forest. He gradually learnt about the beauty of the world around him. He learnt to care for creatures smaller than himself. He grew strong and wise and selfless. His only companion was the Tamarind drum, and the drum, when he beat it, gave him all the advice and experience of the old tree. He learnt to play it so beautifully that even the spirits of the trees were charmed and they went to meet the god who had given him the horns.

‘Forgive him,’ they begged. ‘He has changed. Remove his horns and give him back his kingdom.’
The god waved his hands and the horns disappeared.

Next morning the king went down to a forest pool to drink water. While cupping his hands he saw his reflection, and his lean sun-tanned face looked back at him – without any horns ! And, as he sat up in surprise, several horse-riders burst into the clearing, and he saw his courtiers. They knelt before him. ‘Your majesty, forgive us and come back. The kingdom needs you.’

Passage – 4:

Read the following passage.

If the elephant was doing nothing when Karim’s wife had water to fetch or dinner to cook, either she or Karim would draw a circle in the dust in front of the tethered animal, and put the baby into it.

‘Keep him inside that, O Lord of Elephants,’ they would order the big tusker, who gently stopped the child if he tried to crawl away.
One afternoon when they were camped near the Rapti River, Karim’s wife took a big earthen jar and went off towards the river to fill it. After a while, when she failed to return, Karim shouted in the direction she had taken. But there was no reply.

Quite suddenly Karim, with his heel, marked a circle in front of the elephant and put the baby in it.
‘Look after him, Gajpati!’
He ran to see what had happened to his wife.

Under Gajapati’s trunk, next to his immense toenails, the baby lay and laughed up at the elephant. The infant could do as he liked. They were perfectly content together, these two.

Suddenly^the sun was gone, drawing over it a sky of velvet and diamonds. Immediately, the air was colder, and the baby began to cry. Jackals howled in the dusk, and there came the whoop of an eagle owl.

Passage – 5:

Read the following passage.

About thirty years ago, while travelling and teaching in Turkey, Nepal and Iran, Bonnie Bergin noticed self-sufficient handicapped people going about their unremarkable daily business, often -using burros and donkeys to hold pots, pans and other wares to be sold. She later returned to the United States to begin work on a Master’s Degree in Special Education.

“I thought hard about what can be done to get people out of institutions and onto • the streets, getting jobs, and it came to me – dogs,” says Bergin, who today has a Doctorate in Education and is founder of the Assistance Dog Institute and originator of the service-dog concept.

She ran into fierce resistance from academics and professionals at first. Dogs spread disease. Dogs are stupid. The disabled can’t take care of dogs, how can dogs take care of them ? But the long list of negative reactions didn’t stop her. Her first trainee was Abdul, a golden retriever puppy someone had given her.

Her first dog-assistance client was Kerry Knaus, a soft-spoken 19-year-old woman who had a neuromuscular disorder that had left her unable to move her legs and much of her arms. Bergin and Knaus cbncentrated not on physical gestures but on verbal cues such as “sit” or “stay”, using variations in tone of voice and facial expressions to get Abdul to help Knaus.

By the end of the training the dog could push Knaus up from her in chair falls, open doors, turn on lights, retrieve food and push levers to help her operate the chair and also lift it to her van. Most importantly, Knaus had to develop a trusting emotional bond with Abdul simply by spending time with him, much in the way humans get to know one another and develop a relationship based on mutual understanding.

TS 9th Class English Reading Comprehension Passages Question Number 11 to 15

Passage – 6:

Read the following passage.

“A scrubbing pail,” she said vexed. “A Mother’s Day gift of a scrubbing pail.” Her voice almost broke.

Tears sprang to Nick’s eyes. Without a word he picked up the scrubbing pail and mop and blindly trudged down the stairs. I put the comb in my pocket and ran after him. He was crying and I felt so bad I began to cry, too. On the way down we met Father. Nick could not talk, so I explained.

“I will take it back,” sobbed Nick.
“No,” said Father firmly, taking the pail. “It is a fine gift. A wonderful gift. I should have thought of it myself. Women sometimes don’t see how to escape their burdens. They escape in pretty baubles rather than lighter work.”

We all went upstairs again, Nick climbing very reluctantly. Inside the kitchen, Mother was still scrubbing, but not vigorously. Slowly, sadly.

Without a word Father soaked the puddle of dirty water up with the mop and using the foot wringer on the bucket, neatly squeezed it dry.

“You did not let Nick finish,” he said sternly.

“Part of his gift was that he was going to wash the floor from now on.” He looked at Nick. “Isn’t that so, Nick ?”
With a flush of shame Nick understood the lesson. “Yes, oh, yes,” he said in a low, eager tone.
Quickly, repentantly, Mother said, “It is too heavy work for a fourteen-year-old boy.”

It was then I realised how smart Father was. “Ah,” he said cunningly. “Not with this wonderful wringer and scrub pail. It’s much easier. Your hands stay clean, and your knees don’t hurt.” Again Father demonstrated quickly.

Mother said, looking sadly at Nick, “Ah, a woman can become so stupid.” She kissed Nick and he felt better. Then they turned to me.
“Where is your gift ?” asked Father. Nick looked at me and paled. I felt the comb in my pocket. It would make the scrubbing pail again a scrubbing pail compared with a comb with shining stones just like diamonds.
“Half the scrubbing pail,” I said mournfully, and Nick looked at me with love in his eyes.

TS 9th Class English Reading Comprehension Passages Question Number 11 to 15

Passage No. 7:

Read the following passage.

The grand fare was set before the friend and Moti Lal waited in agonising silence. Today surely, his friend would not say that it did not compare with the feasts of his village. With the great variety of food served, dinner took a long time.

At last the friend spoke, “Today, your food, dear Moti, was fit for the table of a king. But still, it cannot compare with the feasts I have at home.”

Moti Lal nearly dropped down in disappointment. What were the feasts of his friend’s village like ? How lavish were they that the rich fare of his valley could not even compare with them ?

At lunch the next day the food was so delicious that passers-by stopped and licked their lips at just the smell of it. Moti Lal bit his lips nervously. Yet once again Kisan Lal’s response was, “I would really have said that the food today was incomparable had I not tasted the feasts at home.”

Moti Lal silently acknowledged defeat and for the rest of Kisan Lal’s stay, though he always had the best of food served, he no longer tried to compete with the food Kisan ate in his village. Eventually, Kisan Lal went away.
The years rolled by. One winter, Moti Lal decided to leave his snow bound land for a while to enjoy the warmer climate of the plains. He decided to visit his friend. It would be a good opportunity, he felt, to taste the famous feasts of Kisan’s village and their feasts had never really left Moti Lal’s thoughts.

Kisan Lal was delighted to see his friend after so many years. “Do stay and rest ‘ here awhile,” he said &nd Moti Lal willingly accepted.

That evening Moti Lal spent the hours in great expectation. Dinner was served. A servant brought in two plates. Rotis, a bowl of curd, salad, dal and a plate of vegetables was all that had been served. Then the servant departed. Moti Lal waited expectantly. The servant did not reappear. His friend turned to him and said, “Please start your meal.” Moti Lal gulped down the food without a word. He told himself to be patient. TS 9th Class English Reading Comprehension Passages Question Number 11 to 15

Passage – 8:

Read the following passage.

‘We continued on our way, when the tiger again came out into the nullah; and this time, as it stood and looked at us, it was growling and twitching its tail. We again stood quite still, and after a time the tiger quietened down and left the nullah. A little later a number of jungle fowl rose cackling out of the dense scrub, evidently disturbed by the tiger, and one of them came and sat on a tree right in front of us. As the bird flighted on a branch in full view of us, Har Singh said he would shoot it and so avoid going home empty-handed. He added that the shot would frighten away the tiger, and before I could stop him he had fired.’

‘Next second there was a terrifying roar as the tiger came towards us crashing through broken branches. At this spot there were some runi trees growing on the edge of the nullah, and l dashed towards one while Har Singh dashed towards another. My tree was nearer the tiger, but before it arrived I had climbed oilt of reach. Har Singh had not learnt to climb trees when he was a boy, as I had.

He was still standing on the ground; reaching up and trying to grasp a branch, when the tiger, after leaving me, sprang at him. Har Singh was screaming and the tiger was roaring. I had taken my gun into the tree with me, so now I fired the gun off into the air. On hearing the shot so close to it, the tiger bounded away, and Har Singh collapsed at the foot of the tree.’

‘When the tiger had been gone some time, I climbed down very silently, and went to Har Singh. I found that one of the tiger’s claws had entered his stomach and torn the lining from his navel to within a few fingers’ breadth of the backbone, and that all his insides had fallen out. I was in great trouble. I could not run away and leave Har Singh. I did not know what to do with his intestines, not having any experience in these matters.

Har Singh told me to put them back into his stomach. I stuffed them all back, including the dry leaves and grass and twigs that were sticking to them. After I had done that I wound my pugree round his stomach, knotting it tight to keep everything from falling out again. Then we set out on the seven-mile walk to our village, myself in front, carrying the two guns, while Har Singh walked behind.’

The Daffodils

I wandered lonely as cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle in the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay :
Ten thousand saw I at a glance
Tossing their head in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced? but they
Outdid the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company;
I gazed – and gazed – but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought
For oft, when on my couch I lie .
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills
And dances with the daffodils.

In a rich and fruitful land,
Babes reduc’d to misery,

And so many children poor?
It is a land of poverty.

And their fields are bleak and bare,

And all the air a solemn stillness holds,
Save where the beetle wheels his droning flight,

4. Read the following poem.

On killing a Tree

It takes much time to kill a tree,
Not a simple jab of the knife
Will do It. It has grown
Slowly consuming the earth,
Rising out of It, feeding
Upon its crust, absorbing
Years of sunlight, air, water,
And out of Its leprous hide
Sprouting leaves.
So hack and chop
But this alone won’t do It.
Not so much pain will do it.
The bleeding bark will heal

And from close to the ground
Will rise curled green twigs,
Miniature boughs
Which if unchecked will expand again
To former size.
No,
The root is to be pulled out
Out of the anchoring earth;
It Is to be roped, tied,
And pulled out – snapped out
Or pulled out entirely,
Out from the earth-cave,
And the strength of the tree exposed,

The source, white and wet,
The most sensitive, hidden
For years inside the earth.
Then the matter
Of scorching and choking

In sun and air,
Browning, hardening,
Twisting, withering,
And then it is done.
– Gieve Patel

A something shining in the dark,
And knew the glow-worm by his spark;
So, stooping down from hawthorn top,

The worm, aware of his intent,
Harangued him thus, right eloquent –
“Did you admire my lamp,” quoth he,
“As much as I your minstrelsy
You would abhor to do me wrong,
As much as 1 to spoil your song ;
For ’twas the self-same power divine,
Taught you to sing, and me to shine;
