Question 17.
A) Pollen grain reached the stigma of a flower. Explain the changes that occur up to the formation of seeds in a sequence.
Answer:

  1. Fertilization occurs in the ovary of the flowering plants.
  2. Ovary contains ovule. It comprises the integuments, gametophyte cells, embryo sac.
    a) Embryo sac has a large central cell containing two nuclei called polar nuclei.
    b) Female gametophyte or egg which is bigger in size is located at the end ofembryosac surrounded with two synergids.
    c) Anti-podals are located at the other side of embryo sac.
  3. Cells on the surface of the stigma secrete a sticky nutrient fluid containing sugar and .other substances.
  4. This will help the pollengrain to germinate to form pollen tube.
  5. The pollen tube penetrates into opening of ovule and finally enters into the embryo sac and releases the two male nuclei into the embryo sac.
  6. One of the two nuclei fuses with the egg to form a zygote. The second male nucleus fuses with fusion nucleus and forms the endosperm.
  7. Thus, the union of one male nucleus with the egg, and the second male nucleus with fusion nucleus is called double fertilization.

(OR)

B) Explain various steps in the mechanism of urine formation.
Answer:
Urine Formation:

i) Glomerular filtration :
Blood flows inside the glomerulus under the influence of pressure due to the narrowness of efferent arteriole. As a result it undergoes pressure filtration or ultra filtration. Waste molecules, nutrient molecules and water are filtered out and enter the Bowman’s capsule.

ii) Tubular reabsorption : The peritubular capillaries around PCT reabsorb all the useful components of primary urine such as glucose, amino acids, vitamin C, Potassium, Calcium, Sodium, Chlorides and 75% of Water.

iii) Tubular secretion : It is the active secretion of waste products by blood capillaries into the urinary tubule. It ensures removal of all the waste products from blood, viz., urea, uric acid, creatinine, salt ions like K+, Na+ and H+ ions. This maintains proper concentration and pH of
urine.

Mechanism of urine formation

The urine formed in different stages is collected by the collecting tubes. Later they send the urine to pelvis. Pelvis carry the urine to ureters. Ureters carry urine to urinary bladder. Due to the affect of hormone vasopressin urine is passed out.
