Questions : (1 – 10), Marks : 15

Old Giant: I once owned a large, lovely garden, with soft green grass. Here and there over the grass stood beautiful flowers like stars, and there were twelve peach trees that in the springtime broke out into delicate blossoms of pink and pearl and in the autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that the children used to stop their games in order to listen to them.

Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in MY garden… but one day I came back.

I had been to visit my friend the Cornish ogre, and had stayed with him for seven years. After the seven years were over, I had said all that I had to say, and I determined to return to my own castle. When I arrived, I saw children playing in MY garden.

The Giant: What are you doing here?
(The children run away.)

The Giant: My own garden is my own garden; any one can understand that, and
I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.
(The old giant points out the younger giant working on a wall, putting up a sign and then listening at the wall.)

Old Giant: So I built a high wall all round and put up a notice-board:
TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED

Snow and Frost : Spring has forgotten this garden; so now we can live here all the year round!
Old Giant : The Snow covered up the grass with her great white cloak, and the Frost painted all the trees sliver. Then they invited the North Wind to stay with them. When he came, he was wrapped in heavy furs. He roared all day about the garden and rejoiced in blowing the chimney pots over.
North Wind: This is a delightful spot; we must ask the Hail to come on a visit.
Old Giant : So the old Hail came. Every day for three hours he rattled on the roof of the castle till he broke most of the slates, and then he ran round and round the garden as fast as he could go. He was dressed in grey, and his breath was like ice. I sat at the window and looked out at my cold white garden.
The Giant : I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in coming. I hope there will be a change in the weather.

2. Read the following passage.

It happened in the New York of 1866 — a city of horse cars and hansom cabs.

A weary truck horse pulled up to the curb and quivered under the driver’s whip. The truckman shouted “C’mon you —” and laid on the lash.

Suddenly, the flickering light of a street lamp outlined a man in Prince Albert coat and top hat.
“Stop, my friend !” he said to the driver. “You can’t do that.”

“Can’t beat my own horse ?” sneered the truckman. “Who says I can’t ?” And the lash flicked out again at the weary horse.
The top-hatted gentleman raised his cane to call a nearby policeman. “Arrest this driver,” he said. “The charge is cruelty to animals.”

In court the driver, still muttering about “meddling swells,” paid a fine of ten dollars. It was one of the first convictions secured by the new Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which was founded in that same year of 1866 by the same impeccably gentleman, Henry Bergh.

Today, kindness to animals is an axiom everywhere. Animal owners practise it – – or else — the “else” meaning that the ASPCA gets after them. But in bygone days the devoted dog, the faithful horse, received no more protection than a man’s umbrella.

When Henry Bergh set out to apply his hard-work anti-cruelty law, he met with sneers and catcalls. Yet the Great Meddler, as he was called, carried on almost single-handed. Why did this sensitive, wealthy crusader persist ? The answer lies in the strange career of one of the most colourful reformers in American history.

Question 2.
The Giant observed that the Hail stopped dancing, the North Wind ceased his roaring and the Spring had come at last in his garden. He noticed some children coming through a little hole in the wall and sitting in the branches of the trees. The trees were covered with blossoms. The birds were flying about and twittering with delight. On seeing all these things, the Giant felt very happy. He understood that it was all because of the re-appearance of the children.
Narrate the feelings of the Giant at this juncture.
Answer:
The Giant believed the Spring had come at last! A delicious smell was coming from the window. The Hail stopped dancing over his head and the North Wind ceased his roaring. The Snow and the Frost left his garden. He heard the beautiful music and thought it must be the king’s musicians passing by, but it was really a bird singing. These were all the signs of the arrival of the Spring.

The Giant felt very happy to see the Spring in his garden. He was eagerly waiting for the Spring to come. He couldn’t understand why the Spring was so late. He thought, “Today is a very good day. As soon as a I woke up I heard some beautiful music and the Spring has brought delicious smell. Now, I see what has happened in my garden. Oh ! What a beautiful sight this is ! The children are coming into my garden through a little hole in the wall. Yes, it is all because of these children.

The trees have covered themselves with blossoms. The birds are flying about and twittering with delight. The children are climbing up the trees. The trees are so glad to have the children back again. What a marvellous sight this is ! I am the happiest man on earth. How selfish I have been ! Now I know why the Spring would not come here. I won’t repeat it again. I shall allow the children to play in my garden. It only gives me the real joy and satisfaction.” These thoughts were lingering in the Giant’s mind. He took a strong decision that he should allow the children to play in his garden from that day onwards.

Dear Susmitha,

I am safe here and hope the same with you. What are the things with you ? It’s a long time since I received a letter from you. I have been writing my examinations very well. What about you ?

In this letter I would like to write to you about a man who met with an accident. Last Monday, while I was returning from school at about 5 p.m. I saw a lorry speeding towards a biker and hit him hard. The biker landed ten feet away and the lorry driver didn’t stop the lorry. I immediately noted its number. The biker was severely injured. He was bleeding severely. A huge crowd gathered around him but no one came forward to help him. I rang up to 108 ambulance and it reached the spot in no time.

The police also arrived at the spot soon. The man was rushed to the nearby super speciality hospital. Though he was suffering from severe pain and bleeding no one came forward to help him. After receiving my call only the ambulance and the police arrived at the spot. This shows us the lack of humanity in us. Everyone of us should try to help the man who is in need. We should think that one day we shall be in the sufferer’s place. Don’t forget that we are all human beings, Helping others gives us real joy.

Convey my regards to your parents. Write to me the reply soon.

Your loving friend,
xxxxx

Essay:

Question 4.
Write an essay about the importance of helping others. While writing essay you should keep the following points in your view.

  • Why should we help others ?
  • The ways in which we can help others
  • Joy and satisfaction we get in helping others

Answer:

The Importance of Helping Others

Helping others is one of the most important aspects in life. It is a human nature to help others. There are so many people such as the persons who are suffering from certain illness, dying destitutes, the handicapped people, the poor people, the elderly, the women, the orphans, etc. who are looking for a helping hand. We may help them in so many ways.

We should open our eyes to the needs of the people living around us. We should do something to make others happy. When we give something to others, it fills our life with joy and nourishes our soul. The habit of giving provides us with the reward that is far more valuable than the gift. Gandhiji said, “To find yourself, lose yourself in the service of others. Service to others always costs something — sometimes money, sometimes time and sometimes our energy. It is our responsibility to help others and at the same time we should not expect anything from others in return.

Mother Teresa says, “Give, but give until it hurts.” There are so many ways and different forms of helping others. Helping others makes us feel better. The purpose of human life is to use our body and mind for helping others. We get warmth and satisfaction by helping others. Helping others brings happiness to oneself from the smile and the look filled with gratitude that the receivers give. Helping others brings out the best in us. The more we give away, the more comes back.

The rewards of helping others are priceless. If we give happiness to others, we will be more happy. The gift of joy will come to us when we help others. Everyone of us should try to help others in the way we can.

Question 6.
You know that World Humanitarian Day is held on August 19 every year. Imagine that you are to deliver a speech on the occasion in your school. Prepare a speech. While preparing speech, keep the following points in your view.

  • What is humanity ?
  • Why should we help others ?
  • What should we do ?
  • What one can do to uplift someone

Answer:
Respected headmaster, dear teachers and my fellow students,

A very good morning to all ! Today on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day, I stand before you to speak something about the need and importance of humanity. I think the humanity is the act of being kind to people and animals by making sure that they do not suffer more than is necessary. It is a human nature to help others. It is often said that one gets a lot more happiness when one gives something rather than when one is given something.

World Humanitarian Day is celebrated every year on August 19 to recognize humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes. It is the time for us to recognize those, who face dangers and adversity in order to help others. This day also gives us an opportunity to celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work around the globe. It is the time for us to celebrate the commitment and passion that are shown by the people who continue to help the millions affected by disasters around the world.

We should develop the habit of helping others who are in need. There are so many ways to help others. We may help the people who are suffering from severe poverty, who are hospitalized, who are homeless, who are elderly, who are the victims of certain disasters, etc. We are always rewarded for the good things we do in our lives. In most of the cases the treatment we offer to others will be returned to us in some other form.

Now you all think how we can uplift someone’s spirits. We can visit a hosptial and spend some time with the sufferers. When people are hospitalized, they often experience a tremendous amount of fear and anxiety. We may comfort them by chatting a few minutes with them. We may help them by offering them nutritious food, clothes, money, etc. The elderly people, the women, the poor children, the destitutes, the handicapped people, etc. need help from others. We can help them in so many ways.

Thank you one and all for giving me this opportunity.
