‘Bow to the board,’ said Bumble. Oliver brushed away two or three tears that were lingering in his eyes; and seeing no board but the table, bowed to that.

3. Read the following passage.

Oliver bowed low, directed by the beadle, and was then hurried away to a large ward; where, on a rough, hard bed, he sobbed himself to sleep.

Poor Oliver! As he lay sleeping, unconscious of everything around him, the board had taken a decision that would change the course of his life.

The members of this board were very wise and philosophical men. As they turned their attention to the workhouse, they discovered that it was the regular place of public entertainment for the poorer classes. It was the place where they had breakfast, dinner, tea, and supper sill the year round and free; where it was all play and no work. This was really a shocking state of affairs.

They were of the opinion that the poor should be given only two alternatives – to starve either quickly outside the work house, or gradually inside the house. With this view, they decided that the inmates of the workhouse would be issued three meals of thin gruel a day, with an onion twice a week.

For the first six months after Oliver Twist was moved in, the system was in full operation. As a result, during this period, the number of workhouse inmates got smaller, and the inmates themselves shrank in size and became thinner.
The room in which the boys were fed, was a large stone hall, with a big copper bowl at one end, out of which the master, dressed in an apron for the purpose, and assisted by one or two women, ladled the gruel at mealtime.

Of this festive composition each boy had one basinful and no more-except on occasions of great public rejoicing, when he had two ounces and a quarter of bread besides.

4. Read the following passage.

The basins never wanted washing. The boys polished them with their spoons till they shone again. When they had performed this operation they would sit staring at the copper bowl, with such eager eyes, as if they could have devoured the big bowl itself and everything in it. At the same time they sucked their fingers most carefully to catch up any stray splashes of gruel that might have stuck, thereon. Boys have generally excellent appetite.

Oliver Twist and his companions suffered the tortures of slow starvation for three months; at last they got so voracious and wild with hunger, that one boy, who was tall for his age, and hadn’t been used to that sort of thing (for his father had kept a small cook-shop), hinted darkly to his companions, that unless he had another basin of gruel per day, he was afraid he might some night happen to eat the boy who slept next to him, who happened to be a weakly youth of tender age. He had a wild, hungry eye; and they believed him. A council was held; lots were cast as to who should walk up to the master after supper that evening, and ask for more; and it fell to Oliver Twist.

The evening arrived; the boys took their places. The master, in his cook’s uni¬form, stationed himself at the copper; his assistants ranged themselves behind him; the gruel was served out. The gruel disappeared; the boys whispered to each other, and winked at Oliver, while his next neighbours nudged him. Child as he was, he was desperate with hunger, and reckless with misery. He rose from the table; and advancing to the master, basin and spoon in hand, said : somewhat alarmed at his own courage.

‘Please, sir, I want some more.’
The master was a fat, healthy man; but he turned very pale. He gazed in stupefied astonishment on the small rebel for some seconds, and then clung for support to the copper. The assistants were paralyzed with wonder; the boys with fear.

TS 8th Class English Important Questions 2nd Social Issues

Questions : (11 – 16), Marks : 10

1. Read the following passage.
Plants have many uses for man. They give us food and shelter. They also give us fuel, and chemicals. They give out the oxygen we need to breathe, and at the same time take in the carbon dioxide that we breathe out. This is how the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air stay the same.

We get our food from different parts of different plants. We eat the roots and stems of some the potato for example, is a stem. We eat the leaves of some plants—spinach for example — and the flowers of others (like the cauliflower). Sometimes we even eat the seeds — wheat and dal are seeds. Our cooking oil comes from plants, nuts and sunflower seeds, among other things.

Do you like tea or coffee ? Tea is made from the leaves of small bushes, and coffee and cocoa, from the seeds of small trees. Fruit juice is made from fruits – oranges, for example, when pressed, give us orange juice.

Trees are valuable for their wood. We get two kinds of wood from trees – soft-wood, used mostly for paper making, and hardwood, used to make houses and furniture.

Some plants are used for making medicines. Opium, made from the seeds of the poppy, is used to make pain-killing medicines. Ayurvedic medicines come from plants, too.

People in villages use wood for cooking, and sometimes for heating. The other fuels we use are coal and oil, both of which come from plants which changed after lying under the earth for millions of years.

Many plants around the world have disappeared because man has destroyed them. Sometimes, man has destroyed plants and trees to get more land for farming or for building houses. Deserts have been formed because animals have been allowed to graze for too long. Forests have been cut down all over the world, and so there have been big changes in the weather.

We should all be worried about this destruction and learn to treat nature with care.

Androcles nearly, died of fright when he saw a gigantic lion standing in the opening of the cave, roaring with anger.

The lion went on roaring without moving forwards or backwards. Androcles expected to be eaten up at any moment, but then he noticed that the lion’s front paw was bleeding. “Perhaps he is roaring not at me but because he is in pain, poor beast,” thought Androcles to himself. And he began very slowly and gently to move towards the lion to see what was making the paw bleed.

He soon saw that a big wooden splinter was stuck in the tender, fleshy part of the lion’s paw, causing the poor animal great pain. Androcles began to talk to the lion very softly, as you would to a child in pain. “I shall try and help you,” he said gently as he lifted the wounded paw and, very very carefully, he pulled the splinter out. The lion seemed to understand that Androcles was helping him. When the splinter had come out, he grate¬fully licked Androcles’ face With his big, rough, wet tongue.

Androcles and the lion soon became fast friends. They lived together, sharing everything like brothers. While the lion went hunting for deer and rabbits, Androcles went fishing in the streams and lakes and gathered berries from the bushes. Every evening the two companions shared their meal. The lion got used to eating berries like Androcles and like them almost as much as tender deer meat. And so the years passed happily for the two friends.

3. Read the following passage.

Racing across the frozen Kansas earth, thirteen-year old Floyd Cunningham low-ered feis head and called upon his young muscles for more speed.

Behind him, far to the rear, came little Glenn, his eight-year-old brother. At each step of their pounding feet, the distance between them grew greater. The little fel¬low panted heavily and tried to keep up.

As Floyd approached the wooden fence which barred their path, he thrust his hands forward, pressed them against the fence top, and swung himself over. A moment later Glenn followed, going through the same gestures. But the fence was much too formidable an obstacle for an eight-year-old. Glenn tumbled roughly on the hard ground.

Floyd started to laugh. Then he saw the hurt look and humiliation on the face of his little brother. Instead, he smiled, reached over the fence, and helped him to the other side.
‘You have a lot of nerve Glenn,” he said admiringly.” Why, I wouldn’t even have tried to jump that fence when I was eight. You sure have a lot of nerve.”

A big grin of embarrassment and gratitude replaced the humiliated look on Glenn’s face. As he looked into the sympathetic, strong eyes of his older brother, he realised all over again how fortunate he was to have someone like Floyd in the family.

But there was little time for reflection on that bitterly cold winter morning of 1918. The boys were already late for their regular chores.

“Let’s go, Glenn,” Floyd said. “The teacher and the kids will be getting there soon.
We’d better have that fire roaring by then.”

Glenn needed no further urging. The job meant a few pennies Of extra income, and pennies were important in the Cunningham household. Some of them, too, were set aside for their college fund. He and Floyd often talked ‘about what important doctors they were going to be when they grew up.

4. Read the following passage.

The worst days of any summer are the rainy ones. We spend all year looking forward to nice weather and long, hot days. All of winter, with its dreary grey days and bitter cold, we dream of those endless days at the beach, laying on the sand and soaking in the bright and burning sun. And then summer comes, and it rains.

As a child, I would wake up to rainy summer days and come close to crying. It wasn’t fair. We suffered through months of school and miserable weather for those scant ten weeks of freedom and balmy weather. Any day that I could not spend at the beach or playing belli with my friends seemed like a punishment for something I didn’t even do.

On those rainy summer days, I had nothing fun to do and could only sit inside, staring out at the rain like a Dickensian orphan. I was am only child, so there was no one else to play with. My father worked from home, so I was not truly alone, but he could not actively play with me since he was technically at work. It was those days that I would resign myself to whatever was on television or any books that I could find lying around. I’d crawl through the day and pray each night that the rain would not be there the next day.

As an adult, though, my opinion of summer rain has changed. When you have to work every day, summer is not as eagerly anticipated. Mostly, the days run together, bleedinginto each other so that they no longer seem like separate entities and instead feel like continuations of the same long day. Everything seems monotonous and dull, and an ennui or listlessness kicks in. Such a mindset makes you cheer for anything new or different.

I spend the winter dreaming of summer and the summer dreaming of winter. When summer comes, I complain about how hot it is. And then I look forward to the rain, because the rain brings with it a cold front, which offers a reprieve —’ admittedly one that is all too short — from the torture of 100° and humid days. Rainy days are still the worst days of the summer, but summer rain today means positively beautiful — and, considerably cooler — weather tomorrow.

Essay:

Question 3.
You have read about Oliver Twist, an orphan boy in the lesson ‘Oliver Asks for More.’ You have also known how Oliver was treated in workhouse, meals supplied to the inmates of the workhouse and child labour.
Now imagine, you are going to participate in an essay writing competition and write an essay on ‘Child Labour’ including the following points.
Who are child labourers ?
How are they treated ?
Child rights
Steps to eradicate child labour
Answer:
Child labour

Child labour is defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity. It is harmful to their physical and mental development. A child labourer is the child who is engaged in some kind of work. India is sadly the home to the largest number of child labourers. The problem of child labour is a ‘ serious matter not only in India but also in other developing countries.

Poverty and lack of social security are the main causes of child labour. Some children become labourers as they lose both their parents. Some others run away from their homes and become labourers to earn their livelihood. In India working children are engaged in different kinds of works. In rural areas, they are engaged in agriculture, domestic jobs, forestry, fishing, etc. In urban areas, they are engaged in houses, shops, industries, restaurants, garages, etc..

Child labourers are exploited in many ways. They are made to work for longer hours but they are paid very minimum wages. After spending a lot of time in their jobs, they don’t find much time to spend with their family members and it leads to insecurity and other emotional problems. Physically too. they become weak. In industries, they are exposed to harmful chemicals. Child labour keeps away the child from all benefits of the childhood and memorable days.

Childhood is considered as the happiest experience in everybody’s life. Children have full rights to get proper attention, love and care from their parents. There are several laws and regulations regarding the child labour in our country. According to the Indian law, children below the age of 14 years should not be employed in any kind of work. Children are the future of our nation. We should protect them. The government should take necessary steps to eradicate child labour. It should be pro¬hibited. The government should strictly implement the laws to avoid the child labour.

Description:

Question 4.
In the lesson, ‘Oliver Asks for More’, you have come across several boys living together in an orphanage under strict guidance.
Imagine that you have happened to visit an orphanage and observed the miserable conditions. Write a description of the conditions of the boys in 10 to 12 sentences. You can focus on

  • living conditions
  • food served
  • clothing
  • punishment
  • relation among boys

Answer:

Misery of Orphans:

I have recently visited an orphanage. There the children lead their lives in miserable conditions. An orphanage is an institution established to take care and upbringing of orphans. There are about one hundred and fifty orphans in the orphanage I have visited. I have found a number of problems in those orphanages.

Good facilities are not provided to the children. They are not provided safe drinking water. They are living miserably. Proper hygienic facilities are not there. A number of children are suffering from various diseases. Low quality food is being served. They are ill-treated.

The children in the orphanages are not given enough clothing to wear. They have to wear the same dress for several days. If they do anything wrong, they have to face the consequences. They are punished severely. There is no amicable relationship among the children either. Most of them are suffering from malnutrition. They are given less nutrient food.

In my view, that orphanage should provide a better service. It should be given funds adequately. It should provide proper education facilities. Recreational facilities are also to be provided. The children should be provided proper practiced sports and games, medical facilities, good food, enough clothing, etc. so that they would develop in a natural way. The orphans should be shown proper affection, attention and kindness.
