Diwali is one of the most important festivals in Indian culture. It is very important for Hindus. It is also celebrated by Sikhs and Jains for variety of reasons. It comes between the middle of October and the middle of November, in the Autumn season. The main theme of the festival is the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. It deals mainly with two stories according to Hindu mythology – the story of , Rama and Sita and the defeat of Narakasura by Lord Krishna. On this day Lord Rama returned to his kingdom ‘Ayodhya’ with his wife Sita, after 14 years of exile in which he put an end to the demon, Ravana of Lanka. On this day, Lord Krishna with the help of his wife Satyabhama, killed the demon Narakasura.

The day before the main festival Diwali, is celebrated as Naraka Chaturdhi, on which people make a huge structure of Narakasura, inserting fire crackers in it. They bum the structure showing the removal of the evil. On the day of Diwali, children wear new clothes. They worship the goddess Lakshmi. In the evening houses are decorated with candle-lights. At night they burn different crackers and enjoy the burning. Special dishes are served. On the whole, it is a joyful day to everyone.
