Question 13.
Describe the structure of a nerve cell.
Answer:

  1. Nerve cell has three parts – Cyton, dendrites and axon.
  2. Cyton contains large and round nucleus and abundant cytoplasm with nissal granules.
  3. Dendrites are short and branched.
  4. Axon is long and cylindrical.
  5. In some nerve cells»axon is surrounded by a layer known as myelin sheath.
  6. The intervals of myelin sheath are known as nodes of ranvier.

Question 16.
A) Describe the process of Coagulation of Blood.
Answer:

  1. Blood platelets play an important role in blood clotting.
  2. When blood vessels are injured, the platelets release an enzyme called thrombokinase.
  3. Thrombokinase acts on another substance called prothrombin and converts it into thrombin.
  4. Thrombin acts on another substance called fibrinogen and converts it into insoluble fibrin.
  5. The blood cells entangle in the fibrin fibres forming the clot.
  6. The fibrin fibres are attached to the edges of wound and pull them together.

B) Explain the process of sex determination in Man.
Answer:

  1. There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in humans.
  2. Of these 23 pairs, 22 pairs are autosomes and these are common both in male and female.
  3. Remaining one pair is allosomes or sex chromosomes.
  4. The ova produced by females contain ‘X’ chromosome and the sperm cells produced by the males contain either ‘X’ or ‘Y’ chromosomes.
  5. If the sperm cell which contains ‘X’ chromosome fertilizes with the ovum, the resultant baby will be “Female”.
  6. If the sperm cell which contains ‘Y’ chromosome fertilizes with the ovum, the resultant baby will be “Male”.

Question 17.
A) Write an experiment to prove that oxygen is evolved during photosynthesis in the presence of light.
Answer:
Aim :
To prove that oxygen is evolved during photosynthesis in the presence of light.

Materials required :
Glass beaker, test tube, glass funnel, Hydrilla / Elodea twigs, water, matchstick/ incense stick.

Procedure:

  1. Place some water plant like Hydrilla or Elodea in a short stemmed funnel and keep it in a beaker.
  2. Then pour some water in the beaker.
  3. Invert a test-tube full of water over the stem of the funnel.
  4. See that the level of water in the beaker is above the level of stem of the inverted funnel.
  5. Make two identical sets in the above procedure.
  6. Place one apparatus in the sun and other one in the dark for at least 2-3 hours.

Observations:

  1. In the setup in sun, in place of water there is air that fills the test tube.
  2. It is not happening in the set up that is placed in dark.
  3. When the gas in the test-tube is tested by inserting a glowing match stick/incense stick it would bum into flames.

Result:
It is proved that oxygen is evolved during photosynthesis in the presence of light.
