Question 7.
“An athlete completed 100 mts. race by holding his breath.” Give reason.
Answer:

  1. During a 100 m. race a well trained athlete holds his breath all the time to run fast. He pants afterwards to clear the oxygen debt.
  2. During running the muscles use the energy released through the anaerobic break down of glucose.

Question 8.
Why do sub-cutaneous blood vessels bulge on the side away from the heart when the hand is tied ?
Answer:
The blood in the veins always flows towards the heart. This is why veins bulge on the side away from the heart when the hand is tied.

Question 9.
What is the role of graffian follicles in the release of ovum ?
Answer:

  1. The ova develops in tiny cellular structures called follicles, which at first looks like cellular bubbles in the ovary.
  2. They are called graffian follicles. Each follicle contains an ovum. When an ovum matures, the follicle ruptures at the surface of the ovary and ovum is flushed out.

Question 10.
Why is the idea of setting up zoos emerged ?
Answer:

  1. Setting up zoos is for conservation of animals, research about the wild animals etc.
  2. Zoo gives us an opportunity to see and learn about animals found in different places in the world.

Question 13.
Scavenging profession is also respectable profession like other professions. How would you appreciate ?
Answer:

  1. Work is divinity. That too the cleaning work is very important, because without cleanliness we can’t live healthy and happily.
  2. If scavengers are not doing their work for a week, garbage dumps over flow and people of that area can’t live there. And they are also working at the cost of their personal health.

Question 14.
Differentiate Bio – accumulation and Bio – magnification.
Answer:

  1. The process of entry of pollutants in a food chain is known as Bio-accumulation.
  2. The tendency of pollutants to concentrate as they move from one trophic level to the next is known as Bio-magnification.
  3. These explain the accumulation of pollutants in human beings.

Question 15.
Balance the following equation. Write your opinion what you have understood through this equation.
CO2 + 2H2O AP SSC Biology Model Paper Set 8 with Solutions 2 CH2O + H2O + O2
Answer:
6CO2 + 12H2O AP SSC Biology Model Paper Set 8 with Solutions 2 C6H12O6 + 6H2O + 6O2

For each molecule of carbohydrate one molecule of water and one molecule of oxygen are produced. So glucose has 6 carbon atoms. Hence the above equation is multiplied by 6. Thus we can get the balanced equation.

Question 16.
A) Write the procedure, precautions and observations in the lab activity, “Sunlight is necessary for photosynthesis.”
Answer:
Aim : To prove that sunlight is necessary for photosynthesis by Ganang’s light screen experiment.
Apparatus : Potted plant, light screen, iodine solution

AP SSC Biology Model Paper Set 8 with Solutions 7

Procedure:

  1. Take a potted plant and destarch it by keeping it in the dark for nearly a week.
  2. One of its leaves is covered with black paper on which a design is cut.
  3. The paper on the leaf is fixed in such a manner that light does not enter the dark part.
  4. The entire apparatus is kept in the sunlight for few hours.
  5. After few hours of exposure to bright sunlight, the leaf which is covered by black paper is tested for the presence of starch.

Observation :
It is observed that only the parts of the leaf, which got light through the cut design, turns blue-black showing the presence of starch.

Inference :
This experiment proves that light is necessary for photosynthesis.

Precautions:

  1. Test tube with methylated spirit is kept in slant position in water beaker at the time of heating.
  2. Arrange the apparatus in sunlight available area and make sure that light penetrates through light screen.

(OR)

B) Observe the set of apparatus and answer the following questions.

AP SSC Biology Model Paper Set 8 with Solutions 3

1) Which process do we know with the help of this experiment?
Answer:
Combustion

2) How does this process differ with respiration?
Answer:
Respiration occurs in the presence of water. Combustion occurs in the absence of water.

3) What are the similarities between this process and respiration?
Answer:
In both processes energy is released.

4) Which gas turns lime water milky?
Answer:
Carbon dioxide – CO2

Question 17.
A) What is ecological pyramid ? What concepts are revealed by pyramid of biomass?
Answer:
1. The graphic representation of the feeding level (trophic level) of an ecosystem by taking the shape of a pyramid is called “Ecological pyramid”.

AP SSC Biology Model Paper Set 8 with Solutions 8

2. It was first introduced by a British ecologist Charles Elton in 1927.
3. Any type of plant or animal material that can be converted into energy is called biomass.
4. The pyramid of biomass represents the relationships that exist between the quality of living matter (biomass) at different trophic levels.
5. In terrestrial ecosystems, the pyramid of biomass is always upright.
6. In aquatic ecosystems, the pyramid of biomass is always inverted.

AP SSC Biology Model Paper Set 8 with Solutions 9

7. The biomass in each trophic level is always less than the trophic level below. This is because biomass is a measure of the amount of food available.
8. The biomass pyramid shows that animals are relatively inefficient in converting food into body tissues.

B) “The humans who were developed by using the natural resources, today have become the reason for destroying them”. Explain analytically.
Answer:
Humans are responsible for destruction of natural resources.

  1. People often waste natural resources, animals are over hunted, forests are cleared exposing land to wind and water.
  2. Fertile soil is exhausted and lost to erosion because of poor farming practices.
  3. Fuel supplies are depleted, water and air are polluted.
  4. If resources are carelessly managed, they will be used up. If used wisely and efficiently however, renewable resources will last much longer. Through conservation people can reduce waste and manage natural resources wisely.
