Question 13.
Explain any two diseases caused due to the malnutrition.
Answer:
Two diseases caused due to malnutrition are

  1. Kwashiorkor disease
  2. Marasmus

1. Kwashiorkor disease:

  1. This is caused due to the deficiency of proteins in the diet.
  2. Body parts become swollen due to accumulation of water in the intercellular spaces.
  3. Very poor muscle development.
  4. Swollen legs and fluffy face.
  5. Often suffer from diarrhoea and dry skin.

2. Marasmus:

  1. This is caused due to the deficiency of proteins in the diet.
  2. Generally this disease occurs when there is an immediate second pregnancy or repeated child births.
  3. Lean and weak body parts.
  4. Swelling in joints of limbs and less developed muscles.
  5. Often suffers from diarrhoea and dry skin.

Question 14.
What procedure did you follow in your laboratory to observe the growth of sporangia in Rhizopus (or) common mold ?
Answer:

  1. Place a drop of water on the centre of the slide.
  2. Using a toothpick, scrape very little of the mold and place it on the drop of water.
  3. Then cover it with cover slip without trapping any air bubbles.
  4. Remove excess water at the edges of the coverslip with a tissue paper.
  5. Observe the slide under a compound microscope.

Question 15.
If the valves in the veins of the legs stop the flow of blood, guess what could be the consequences of this condition ?
Answer:

  1. If the valves in the veins of the legs fail reverse flow of the blood will be stopped,so that the blood accumulates in the veins and causes swelling of legs and leads to edema.
  2. On the other hand, blood will not circulate properly to the heart and blood circulation will be affected.

AP SSC Biology Model Paper Set 2 with Solutions 3

a) What is the aim of this experiment?
Answer:
To prove the release of CO2 by anaerobic respiration.

b) Which organism is taken for this experiment?
Answer:
Yeast

c) Which chemical is used to test the presence of oxygen ?
Answer:
Diazine green (or) Janus green – B

d) How do you prevent the entry of oxygen into the glucose solution of this experiment ?
Answer:
By pouring liquid paraffin on the surface of glucose solution.

(OR)

B) Draw the diagram showing the apparatus of hydrilla experiment i.e. the experiment which shows O2 is released during photosynthesis conducted by you.

a) Write the reasons to keep the test tube invertly on the stem of the funnel.
Answer:

AP SSC Biology Model Paper Set 2 with Solutions 8

Hydrilla Experiment

In this experiment the test tube was inverted on the funnel to collect gas released during photosynthesis.

b) Give a balanced equation to represent the process.
Answer:
6CO2 + 12H2O AP SSC Biology Model Paper Set 2 with Solutions 9 C6H12O6 + 6H2O + 6O2

c) How do you test the gas released in the experiment ?
Answer:
If we put glowing splinter it bums brightly.

d) What happens if a same set is kept in dark for sometime ?
Answer:
No gas bubbles are produced.

Question 17.
A) Observe the pyramid and answer the following questions.

AP SSC Biology Model Paper Set 2 with Solutions 5

a) Which trophic level has less number of organisms ?
Answer:
4th trophic level / Tertiary consumers.

b) Who are the producers in the given pyramid ?
Answer:
Green plants / Autotrophs.

c) Give two examples of primary consumers.
Answer:
Cow, goat.

d) What happens if the primary consumers are removed from the pyramid ?
Answer:
No food will be available to the carnivores and they will die. The number of producers will be increased.

(OR)

B) Give reasons.

a) Why is photosynthesis considered the basic energy source for most of living world ?
Answer:

  1. During photosynthesis, plants trap solar energy and by utilising simple inorganic substances like CO2 and H2O, they prepare complex organic substances like carbohydrates.
  2. These carbohydrates are utilised for providing energy for most living organisms including human beings.
  3. It is the only process which adds O2 to the atmosphere and makes our living possible.
  4. Hence, photosynthesis is considered the basic energy source for most of living world.

b) Why is it better to call the dark phase of photosynthesis a light independent phase ?
Answer:

  1. Dark reaction of photosynthesis does not require light energy. It occurs in the presence or absence of light
  2. Hence it is better to call the dark phase of photosynthesis as a light independent phase.

c) Why is it necessary to destarch a plant before performing any experiment on photosynthesis ?
Answer:

  1. To get better results from related experiment, it is necessary to destarch a plant before performing any experiment on photosynthesis.
  2. The plant which is kept in the dark place for few days for the removal of starch from the leaves, is called a destarched plant.

d) Why is it not possible to demonstrate respiration in green plants kept in sunlight?
Answer:

  1. During day time plants carryout photosynthesis actively.
  2. During this time O2, given out as a by-product, is taken up by plants for respiration.
  3. Not only this, CO2 produced during respiration will be used up in photosynthesis.
  4. As both photosynthesis and respiration are inter related, it is not possible to demonstrate respiration during day time.
