Sindbad, the Sailor Summary in English

I started on a ship with a load of things for trade along with my friends. We came to an island. I went ashore, ate some food and slept under a tree. When I woke up, my friends had already gone. I climbed upon a tree and saw the surroundings. I saw a white thing. When I went nearer, I saw that it was a very big egg of an eagle. In a short time, an eagle came and sat on it. The bird was called roc.

I tied myself to the huge leg of the roc with my turban so that I could be carried away from that place. The bird flew along with me and placed me on the ground. I saw large diamonds on the ground. I was happy but there were big snakes all around. I was very much frightened. They used to come out only during nights.

I saw a cave there. I went into the cave. I could not sleep due to the hissings of the snakes. Suddenly huge pieces of meat fell on the ground. The local merchants used to throw the pieces of meat into the valley. Large diamonds stick to it. Eagles took the meat and flew to their nests. The merchants used to take the diamonds from the nests. I wanted to follow the same procedure.

I gathered many large diamonds, put them in a wallet and tied the wallet to my waist. I tied big pieces of meat on my back. A huge eagle came and carried me away to the nest. There were my friends near the nest. We returned to Baghdad. I became very rich. I helped the poor people with my money.

B) Describe the adventure of Sindbad, the sailor in your own words. Use the following clues.

  • He being left alone on the island
  • his exit from the island
  • stay on the valley of diamonds
  • tied a piece of meat to his back.
  • an eagle brought him out for the meat.
  • becoming rich.

Answer:
Once Sindbad, the sailor, fell asleep on an island after having his meal. When he woke up he found that the boat had left him behind. There he saw a huge white ball which was a roc’s egg. When the roc came to brood its egg he tied himself to the roc’s leg and flew with it. The experience of flying on the roc’s leg was a terrible one in which he had almost lost his senses.

The bird landed on a place surrounded by immense mountains with steep valleys. While the bird was catching a snake, Sindbad quickly untied himself. It was a valley of diamonds with huge serpents. They hid themselves in caves during the day to protect themselves from the rocs. During the night they all came out of their homes. Sindbad hid in a cave and covered it with a huge rock. He spent the night there full of fear.

The next day while he was sleeping in the sun, a huge piece of raw meat fell near him. He recollected the stories of how the merchants used huge eagles to carry up diamonds for them. He was wise enough to quickly think of a plan.

He tied a piece of meat to his back and lay down. A huge eagle picked him up with no difficulty and dropped him in its nest. Thus Sindbad came up from the steep valley. The merchants who were surprised to see him arranged his travel back home. There Sindbad sold the diamonds he had collected and became rich.

We decided to go ashore. My friends went to gather fruits and flowers, but I took my food packet to a place in the shade. I had good meal and lay down to sleep under the trees. Not knowing what to do, I climbed up to the top of a tall tree and looked over the island on all sides. In the distance I could see something white, and decided to find out what it was.

Soon, I came to what seemed like a huge white ball. When I touched it, it felt very smooth. It was so high that I could not see the top of it, and it was more than fifty paces round. There was no door on any side, and it was too smooth to climb.

Suddenly, the sky above me became dark, as if a huge cloud was covering it. Looking up, I saw that the darkness was caused by the shadow of a huge bird that was flying towards me.
