Bammera Pothana was the remarkable poet of Telangana state. He was born in Bammera village of Warangal district. His parents were Kesanna and Lakshmamma. He translated Bhagavatham into Telugu. He was a devotee of Lord Shiva, later he became a devotee of Lord Rama. Pothana’s other pieces of literature are Bhogini Dandakamu and Veerabhadra Vijayamu. Though Pothana is not among us now, his poetry still rings in our ears.

Read the following passage.
There was once a wise king called Shantanu. He ruled over the kingdom of Hastinapura. The people of Hastinapura and loved and respected him. They were truly happy when he made his only son, Devavrata, heir to throne. They were happy because Devavrata was the best person to take over from Shantanu. Schooled in warfare and horse back riding, Devavrata had all the qualities to succeed to the throne.
However, a little later Shantanu fell in love with Satyavati, the daughter of a poor fisherman, and wanted to marry her. But the fisherman would not allow the marriage unless Shantanu promised that Satyavati’s sons alone, and not prince Devavrata, would succeed him as king. Shantanu, though was not prepared to make the promise the fisherman wanted. Since he could not forget Satyavati, he became sad and lonely and shut himself in his palace.
Devavrata soon found out why his father was troubled. He went to the fisherman turned down his request. Devavrata then promised the fisherman that he would never marry and that Satyavati’s sons alone would rule Hastinapura after Shantanu’s death. At that moment, a chorus of voices from heaven cried out “Bhishma!” in appreciation of Devavrata’s great promise. Ever after that, Devavrata was known as ‘Bhishma’ or the one who makes and keeps a great promise.

Bob Gauchie was all alone in his little aeroplane when the weather suddenly changed for the worse. The plane crashed. It crashed in the far north of Canada, many hundred kilometers from any town. Luckily Bob was not badly hurt. But how was he to contact anyone ? His radio was broken, he did not have much food, and the early February temperature was sixty degrees below zero.
Bob went outside the aeroplane into the thick snow and tried to repair the radio but failed. Instead his feet became terribly cold, and he later noticed that five of his toes had turned completely black. The toes began to hurt badly.
The damaged plane became Bob’s home. Most of the time he lay under four thick sleeping bags, waiting for an aeroplane to find him. After two weeks he only had some ‘ frozen fish to eat. He realized that people had stopped looking for him. He wrote letters to say goodbye to his wife and daughters.
Then the weather became warmer and he could cook small pieces of fish to eat.
