(C) Read the following passage.

Do you consider these people failures? They succeeded in spite of problems, not in the absence of them. But to the outside world, it appears as though they just got lucky. All success stories are stories of great failures. The only difference is that every time they failed, they bounced back. This is called failing forward, rather than backward. You learn and move forward.

Learn from your failure and keep moving. In 1914, Thomas Edison, at age 67, lost his factory, which was worth a few million dollars, to fire. It had very little insurance. No longer a young man, Edison watched his lifetime effort go up in smoke and said, “There is great value in disaster. All our mistakes are burnt up. Thank God we can start anew.” In spite of the disaster, three weeks later, he invented the phonograph. What an attitude!

Setbacks are inevitable in life. A setback can act as a driving force and also teach us humility. In grief you will find courage and faith to overcome the setback. We need to learn to become victors, not victims. Fear and doubt short-circuit the mind. Ask yourself after every setback What did I learn from this experience? They met. Socrates asked the young man to walk with him toward the river.

When the water got up to their neck, Socrates took the young man by surprise and ducked him into the water. The boy struggled to get out but Socrates was strong and kept him there until the boy started turning blue. Socrates pulled his head out of the water and the- first things the young man did was to gasp and take a deep breath of air. Socrates asked, “What did you want the most when you were there ?”

(Q – 28):

(A) In ‘Attitude is Altitude’ Nick Vujicic loved his parents very much for bringing him up with love and care, even though he was born with no arms and legs. He was also thankful to them for the pains they had taken to make him a motivational speaker.

Now, describe the feelings of Nick Vujicic about the role of his parents for his success in the life. (June 2018)
Answer:
Thought I was born without limbs for no medical reason, I came to know from an early age that I was different because of my parents. I love my parents very much and whatever I had achieved today was due to my parents. I knew that they had a lot of worries about me. Putting aside all these worries was so hard for them but right from the start they did their best to make me independent.

My dad put me In the water at 18 months and gave the courage to learn how to swim, My father taught me how to type with my toe at just 6 years old and mum invented a special plastic device that meant I could hold a pen and pencil. Despite the risk of being bullied, my parents Insisted me on attending mainstream school which was the best decision they could have made for me and I achieved a degree in Financial Planning and Real estate. It was very hard but it gave me independence.

They arranged me an electric wheel chair for mobility and a team of carers to help me. I was deeply depressed when I was eight years old. My mother consoled me and gave the courage to live. At age ten when I tried to drown myself in the bath, they saved me, consoled me and gave the courage to live. When I was 13, my mother gave me a newspaper and made me read an article about a disabled man who had managed to achieve great things and helped others.

Then only I realised why God had made me like this – to give hope to others. With the help of my parents I managed to pull through the hard conbditions to become an international symbol of triumph over adversity. Today I play football and golf, swim and surf due to the courage and inspiration given by my parents. Now I became a motivational speaker and I am encouraging the people who are in need. So I am very thankful to my parents for the pains they had taken to make me a successful person and a great motivational speaker.

(B) In the lesson “Attitude Is Altitude” you have read about Nick Vujicic who proved that one’s disability can’t stop one from reaching great heights, in one’s life. You know that Nick faced many difficulties before he was inspired and gained confidence. As a boy he was deeply depressed. At age ten he tried to drown himself in the bath but luckily the attempt was unsuccessful.

Now describe Nick’s thoughts after his attempt became unsuccessful.
Answer:
I was thoroughly disappointed. Why should I live like this ? When all other children walk and run I have to lie down on the ground with ray face down. It is disgracing and it is disgusting too. How can,I live a family life in this condition ? Will any girl love me? The .other boys at school have always been bullying me. Every time they see me they point to me and say, ‘Look, there creeps a worm.’ It saddens me. I can’t talk back to them. I can’t fight with them. They are physically stronger than me. Even if I were strong I don’t think I would be able to fight with anyone.

I love my parents. But I think they have a lot of worries about me. I wanted to put an end to their worries. The only way was to end my life. There was the bath. When there-was no one to look at I stood near the tub and looked into it I saw my own face in the water. It was calling me and I dived in, Water entered my nostrils. I was gasping for breath. With head deep in the bath I stood upside down in It with my chicken drum-stick wagging ¡n the air.

I don’t know what happened to me.in the bath. I’don’t know how I came out alive. When I opened my eyes I saw myself lying on a bed. My father was sitting near me, My mother was sitting on my bed with tears in her eyes. She was asking me, “Nick, why did you do it ?“ Later I decided to use my life to encourage other people and give them the courage that the article had given me.” The challenges in our lives are there to strengthen our convictions. They are not there to’run us over.” Now I have become I have a motivational speaker.
