Home they brought her warrior dead
She nor swooned, nor uttered a cry;
All her maidens, watching, said.
‘She must weep or she will die’.

Then they praised him, soft and low.
Called him worthy to be loved,
Truest friend and noblest foe;
Yet she neither spoke nor moved.

Stole a maiden from her place,
Lightly to the warrior stepped,
Took the face cloth from the face;
Yet she neither moved nor wept.

Rose a nurse of ninety years,
Set her child upon her knee –
Like summer tempest came her tears –
‘Sweet my child, I live for thee’.
-Alfred Lord Tennyson.

Honey They Brought Her Warrior Dead Summary in English

Alfred Lord Tennyson, who concentrated much on war and war heroes, wrote this above poem.

In the poem, ‘Home They Brought Her Warrior Dead’ the poet depicted the feelings of a warrior’s wife who was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her husband who went to the battle field. Instead of the arrival of the warrior, his dead body was brought home. The wife of the warrior was frozen with deep shock. She neither cried nor lost her consciousness. All her maidens were worried. They said within themselves, she must cry, otherwise she would die.

They started praising the dead warrior. They called him a lovable person, a true friend and a noble enemy. Yet, there was no response from her. She was like a statue.

Meanwhile one of her maids slowly moved from that place and unveiled the cloth from the face of the dead warrior. Even though they were anxious, the warrior’s wife neither move nor she rolled down a tear drop. She was standstill. Then a nurse, who was in her nineties, slowly got up and brought the warrior’s child. She rested the baby on her knees. Then the wife of the dead warrior burst into tears. Tears! which were like summer tempest. She took the child into her arms, and told that she would live for her/him.
