Trees are the most useful things in the world. Children play under them. Travellers rest in their cool shade. Trees give us fruit to eat and firewood to burn. Answer:
Trees breathe in carbondioxide from the air. With the help of the sunlight, they break up carbondioxide into carbon and oxygen. They use the carbon to make starch. Trees make all the starch in the world.

What are annual rings of a tree ?
Answer:
Every year, a tree grows a little bigger. As it grows, the trunk gets another layer of wood, it gets another ring. If we look at the trunk of a cut down tree carefully, we will find the rings. One ring means one year. By counting a tree’s rings, we can say its age.

No, I don’t think trees are enemies to people. In fact they are the most useful things to people. People cut down hundreds of trees every year to build houses, to make furniture, to cook food, and to make paper.

‘If’ Clauses:

I. Look at the following sentence from the lesson.
There are two parts in a conditional sentence.
i) the if – clause and
ii) the main clause.

i) The if – clause : The clause that has ‘if’ in itself is called an ‘if – clause’
ii) The main clause : The remaining part (clause) of the conditional sentence is called the main clause.

The condition introduced by ‘if’ in these sentences expresses a real possibility whose result / effect is felt in the second part of the above sentences.

i) An ‘if clause ’ is also known as a conditional clause. It expresses a condition or cause whose result / effect is expressed or felt in the second part of the sentence.

ii) If the verb in the ‘if clause’ is in the present tense, the other clause (the main clause) normally uses the simple future i.e. shall / will + v₁
Eg : 1) If I go to Vijayawada, I shall meet your brother.

iii) An ‘if clause’ can be placed either at the beginning or at the end of the main clause. If it comes before the main clause, it is followed by a comma. However, if it follows the main clause, there will be no comma preceding the conditional clause.
Eg : 1) If she walks fast, she will catch the bus. (or)
She will catch the bus if she walks fast.

The recent figures reveal clearly that forests have been cut to develop new colonies and to start new industries. The disappearance of forests never means a happy future. Awareness programmes on the importance of trees must be conducted. Felling of trees should be avoided. People must go on planting trees regularly, public must make authorities discharge their duties.

Forests indeed give us life and continue renewing it. They check the soil erosion and floods also. They cause rains and when there are rains, there is life. They are also a source of raw material for many industries. In this way they ensure a happy future for us all as they keep environment clean and pollution free. So people must plant more and more trees.
