I see a man trying to cut a tree down with his axe. A woman has hugged the tree to stop the tree from being felled down. The two girls are telling him not to cut down the tree The woman and the two girls are ready even to sacrifice their lives to save trees.
What do you like/dislike in it ?
I like the woman and two girls preventing him from his cutting down the tree. 1 dislike the man’s act of killing the tree.
What would happen if all the trees were cut doom ?
If all the trees were cut down, there would be no life on earth. There would be no rains. There would be no fresh air.
How are trees helpful to everyone living on earth ?
Trees give us fresh air to breathe. They give us fruit to eat and firewood to burn. They give us rains. We build houses and make furniture with the wood of the trees. Trees give us rubber. Some trees give us medicines.
Role Play – Enact the scene depicted in the picture. (Characters: wood cutter, woman and children)
Woman : Oh, wood cutter! What are you doing?
Wood cutter : Can’t you see? I am cutting down the tree.
Children : Trees are the most useful things in the world. Why do you cut them?
Wood cutter : If I don’t cut down this tree, how can I get my firewood? Don’t irritate me. Let me do my work.
Woman : There is no right for you to cut down this tree. If you want firewood, you can collect dried branches.
Children : Don’t you know, if all the trees are cut down, everyone would die?
Woman : Come on children, let us hug this tree. Then he can’t cut it down.
Wood cutter : What happened to all of you ? If I cut one tree, what would happen?

Wood cutter : Why should I think?
Children : See man, listen to us. Trees give us oxygen to breathe, help us in rainfall. These two are the most important things in our life. Without oxygen we can’t live even a second. Without water how can we survive? Please think about it. You can cook your food with so many other ways like LPG gas, gober gas, etc.
Wood cutter : Can you tell me some more uses of trees?
Woman : Trees are helpful to control pollution also. So please save trees and save life.
Wood cutter : I am thankful to all of you. Now J understood the importance of trees. From today onwards I don’t cut trees. If anybody cuts, I will make them stop.
Children : We are very happy. Atlast you understand that trees are the kindest things in the world.
Woman : OK, children, let us go.
I. Answer the following questions :
How are trees useful to us ?
Trees are the most useful things in the world. Children play under them. Travellers rest in their cool shade. Trees give us fruit to eat and firewood to burn. We build houses and make furniture with the wood of the trees. If there were no trees, there would be no life on earth. Trees breathe in carbondioxide and let out oxygen. Thus
we get the fresh air to breathe. We get starch from trees. Trees help us to get rain. Rain gives us water. Trees give us rubber and some trees give us medicines.
How is starch prepared by trees ?
Trees breathe in carbondioxide from the air. With the help of the sunlight, they break up carbondioxide into carbon and oxygen. They use the carbon to make starch. Trees make all the starch in the world.
What are annual rings of a tree ?
Every year, a tree grows a little bigger. As it grows, the trunk gets another layer of wood, it gets another ring. If we look at the trunk of a cut down tree carefully, we will find the rings. One ring means one year. By counting a tree’s rings, we can say its age.
Do you think trees are enemies to people ? Why do people cut down trees ?
No, I don’t think trees are enemies to people. In fact they are the most useful things to people. People cut down hundreds of trees every year to build houses, to make furniture, to cook food, and to make paper.
What will happen if we do not stop felling of trees ?
If we don’t stop felling of trees, one day there will be no more trees in the world. We will all die. So, we should stop felling of trees.
How can we provide a better environment for the future generation ?
We should avoid cutting trees as far as possible. We must plant a lot of trees. Everyone of us should plant at least one tree every year. Thus we can provide a better environment for the future generation.
What are the most useful things in the world ?
Trees are the most useful things in the world.
Which piece of information do you find most interesting in the passage ?
I think the most interesting piece of information in the passage is that the trees have birthdays. Every year, a tree’s trunk gets another layer of wood which is called a ring. By counting these annual rings, we can say the age of a tree.

ii) If the verb in the ‘if clause’ is in the present tense, the other clause (the main clause) normally uses the simple future i.e. shall / will + v1
Eg : 1) If I go to Vijayawada, I shall meet your brother.
iii) An ‘if clause’ can be placed either at the beginning or at the end of the main clause. If it comes before the main clause, it is followed by a comma. However, if it follows the main clause, there will be no comma preceding the conditional clause.

Conserve Forests for a Happy Future
– by Gautam
The recent figures reveal clearly that forests have been cut to develop new colonies and to start new industries. The disappearance of forests never means a happy future. Awareness programmes on the importance of trees must be conducted. Felling of trees should be avoided. People must go on planting trees regularly, public must make authorities discharge their duties.
Forests indeed give us life and continue renewing it. They check the soil erosion and floods also. They cause rains and when there are rains, there is life. They are also a source of raw material for many industries. In this way they ensure a happy future for us all as they keep environment clean and pollution free. So people must plant more and more trees.

“Why are you crying?” asked the tree. “Because I’m hungry,” said the little boy.
“Eat my fruit,” said the kind tree, and bent down one of its branches. The boy ate the fruits and was happy. The boy grew up. One day he sat under the tree. He was sad. “Why are you sad?” asked the tree. “I’m going to marry,” said the young man. “But I have no house to live in.” “Cut down my branches,” said the tree. “And build a house.” The young man built a house with the branches of the tree. The young man became a sailor. One day he sat under the tree. He looked unhappy. “Why are you unhappy?” asked the tree.

Plant a Tree Summary in English
Trees are the most useful things in the world. Travellers rest in their cool shade. Children play under them. We build houses and make furniture with the wood of the trees. If there were no trees, there would be no life on earth. Trees breathe in carbon dioxide and let oxygen out into the air so that we get oxygen to breathe in. Trees give us starch which is the most important part of our food. They give us rain. They give us rubber.
Some trees have medicinal uses. Some trees live for thousands of years. A tree called General Sherman in California is said to be several thousand years old. We can say the age of a tree by counting its annual rings. If the man continues to cut down the trees, we will all die in future. So we should not cut down the trees as we did in the past. We should plant more trees.
1. sap (n) : the watery substance that carries food through a plant;
When we cut a tree, it oozes the sap.
