This lesson is taken from the work Balanatakani written by Sri Puja Lal. Sri Lal taught at the Sri Aurobindo School, Pondichery. He authored many books in Gujarati and Sanskrit.

The present lesson describes an anecdote of king Bhoja where he was addressed as a foolish king by his wife.

मूर्खराजकम् Summary

King Bhoja’s wife felt lonely not knowing when the king, devoted to Dharma would find leisure time. She wanted to invite her dear friend Vidyavathi to spend time with her till the king arrived. When she called her maids Malathi and Madhavi, they came suppressing their laughter. The queen asked the reason for their laugh. They said that it was their husbands.

What Malathi’s husband wrote, others could not read, and what Madhavi’s husband wrote, he himself could not read. The queen laughed at it saying that their husbands were great scholars. She commented that the difference between a scholar and non-scholar was only one letterpandita and apandita. She asked them to bring her dear friend Vidyavathi to her personal suite.

As soon as she arrived, Vidyavathi asked the queen the reason for her depression, and whether she quarreled with the king. The queen replied that it was not possible as the king was very affectionate towards her. She said that she had the desire to quarrel with her husband, as every woman knew that such quarrels were part of love. But in the case of the king, it was unthinkable.

His love increased with every day. Vidyavathi said that her husband was an angry man, and was not interested in arts or education. He was interested in pleasures only. The queen expressed her sympathy for her. Vidyavathi said that her husband would not dare to be rude with her as he sought the grace of the king. Thus she was indebted to the queen.

At that time, king Bhoja entered the palace without any intimation. The queen, who was a little confused at his sudden arrival welcomed him addressing him as ‘Foolish king. ‘The king was taken a back at this, and calmly returned. Vidyavathi asked the queen why she thus insulted the king. The queen replied that whatever happened had happened. It was a fault of the noble women that they would seek remedies for their condemnable deeds. She had to wait for the result. Vidyavathi took leave of the queen advising her to quickly make amends to the king.

The king deliberated much on why the noble and virtuous queen called him a fool. She never uttered such words about him. But she addressed him as a foolish king in front of her friend. She must have been out of her senses or otherwise she would not have done so. But he could not dismiss her words as irrational. There must have been some reason. He could not know it. He lost sleep thinking about it. He wanted to know the meaning of that word. He thought of convening a meeting with all the scholars in the city. He did so. The next day he stood at the gate to welcome the members.

One by one the poets, ministers etc. arrived. He welcomed them addressing them as Foolish king. The elder of the city was perplexed at the welcome of the king, but decided not to make any reply. The head of the township was also confused when he was thus addressed, and he also decided to go inside bowing to the king. A great scholar arrived then. When the king addressed him as the foolish king, he also thought that it was better to be silent in front of a mad and foolish person.

Then Kalidasa arrived. When the king addressed him thus, he read a verse meaning – “I do not walk while eating. Nor do I speak while laughing. Nor do I lament over what had happened. I do not talk about what I did. I do not interfere when two people are talking. Then why do you call me a fool ?” The king was happy that he received the answer he sought. He apologized to the poet, and took him inside. He requested all the members of the assembly to pardon him for his disrespectful behaviour. He ordered the treasurer to give one lakh gold coins to the poet.

The king thought that he did a foolish thing as he went without informing when the queen was with her friend. He had to immediately go and comfort her. He went to the queen and said that it was not the full truth when it was said that to women husband alone was the object of attention. It should be completed by saying that women were the cause of deliverance to men. He would bow to his teacher. Saying so, he wanted to fall on her feet. The queen stopped him saying not to make her more remorseful. Both of them went away to have their meals.
