AP Inter 1st Year Chemistry Notes 9th Lesson The s-Block Elements
Group – 1
→ Li, Na, K, Pb, Ce and Fr are Alkalimetals i.e., elements with general electronic configuration [Noble gas] ns1.
→ These do not exist in free state due to high chemical reactivity.
→ These impart characterstic colour to an oxidising flame.
→ These forms monoxides, (M2O), Peroxides (M2O2, Superoxides (MO2).
→ Li does not form peroxides, superoxides and Na does not form super oxide.
→ The alkalimetals dissolve in liq. NH3 to give deep blue solution due to ammoniated electrons.
→ Li shows anamalous properties in the group and it lias diagonal relationship with Mg.
→ Na2CO3 is prepared by the solvay’s process.
→ Aq.Na2CO3 is alkaline due to anionic hydrolysis.
→ NaOH is prepared commercially by castuer – keltner process.
Group – 2
→ Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba and Ra are Alkaline earth metals i.e., Group – 2 Elements with general electronic configuration [Noble gas] ns2.
→ Among these elements Ca, Sr and Ba impart characterstic colours to flame.
→ ‘Be’ forms covalent compounds where as others forms ionic compounds.
→ ‘Be’ has anamalous behaviour in this group and it has diagonal relationship with ‘Al’.
→ Plaster of paris is CaSO4 \(\frac{1}{2}\) H2O. It is hemi hydrate of CaSO4.
→ The raw material used for manufacture of cement are clay and lime stone.
