कर्णभारम् Introduction

संस्कृतनाटककर्तृषु अग्रगण्योऽयं भासमहाकविः कालिदासादपि अर्वाचीनः। अनेन रचितानि त्रयोदश नाटकानि भासनाटकचक्रनाम्ना लोके प्रसिद्धानि। रामायण – महाभारत – हरिवंशादीन् आधारीकृत्य अनेन नाटकानि विरचितानि। तानि च –

नाटकान्येतानि टि.गणपतिशास्त्रिमहोदयेन १९०९ वर्षे केरलप्रान्ते लब्धानि। तेनैव शास्त्रिमहोदयेन भासनाटकानि प्रकाशं नीतानि। भासःअसमान प्रतिभावानिति सूरिभिः कीर्त्यते। अस्य रचनारीतिः रम्या।

“Karnabharam” was written by Bhasa. Bhasa wrote thirteen plays in Sanskrit that were based on the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavata and Kathasaritsagara. His works were discovered in 1909 by Sri T. Ganapati Sastry.

Works of Bhasa : His works are

  1. Prathima Natakam
  2. Abhisheka Natakam. These two dramas are based on the epic The Ramayana.
  3. Pancharathram
  4. Madhyama Vyayogam
  5. Duta Ghatothkacham
  6. Karnabharam
  7. Dutavakyam
  8. Urubhangam
  9. Balacharitham.

These seven plays deal with subjects borrowed from The Mahabharata. The plays Prathigna yowgandharayana and Swapna Vasavadattam are based on the legend of Udayana. The last two; Daridra Charudattam and Avimarakam are original works of art.

कर्णभारम् Summary

नाटकमिदं महाभारतमाधारीकृत्य विरचितम्। नाटकेऽस्मिन् युद्धरंगं प्रति गमन-समये कर्णेन अनुभूतः हृदयपरितापः, स्वरथसारथिं शल्यराजं प्रति परशुरामेण कृतशाफ्-वृत्तान्तकथनम्, शक्रेण कवचकुण्डलयाचनम्, तस्मै कवच कुण्डलप्रदानम्, शक्रप्रेषिप – विमलानामकशक्त्यायुधग्रहणमित्यादिविषया उपनिबद्धाः।

Karnabharam
The theme of “Karnabharam” is taken form The Mahabharata. This is a one Act play. The earings and the armour, a divine gift, meant for his protection become a burden to Karna. This burden is physical. Some critics argue that the title suggests the burden of Karna who had to shoulder the responsibility of guarding and protecting the Kaurava armies. The instruction in archery given to him by Parasurama, became futile at the time of war. Thus, Karna’s burden was not only physical but also psychological.

कर्णभारम् Summary

After the tragic fall of Dronacharya in the Mahabharatha war, Duryodhana appointed Karna as the commander-in-chief of the Kaurava forces. The burden of war fell on Karna’s shoulders. A soldier, sent by Duryodhana, went to Karna to inform him that the moment to go to the battlefield had come.

Karna, well equipped and ready for the war, with Salya as his charioteer, ascended the chariot. He instructed Salya to take the chariot where Arjuna was in the battlefield, as he had to fulfil the desire of the Kurus. Feeling unhappy, as he was to fight the Pandavas, his brothers, he shared his feelings with Salya. He said that he was born to Kunti, but came to be known as the son of Radha. He felt that the weapons he acquired had become futile, and also he was bound to the word given to his mother. He began to give a vivid account of how he came to acquire the missiles from Parasurama.

He approached Parasurama to receive instruction in arms. Parasurama said that he would instruct only Brahmins and not Kshatriyas. Then Karna lied that he was not a Kshatriya and began to receive instruction from Parasurama. One day, owing to fatigue, Parasurama placed his head on Karna’s lap and fell asleep. Then he was bitten on his thigh by an insect named Vajramukha’. He endured the pain lest he should disturb his resting teacher. Drenched in blood, Parasurama woke up. He realized that Karna was not a Brahmin but a Kshatriya. He then cursed Karna that the missiles he acquired would fail when he needed them. Then he tested his weapons and said that they became futile. He commented that even the horses and the elephants were showing signs of defeat. When Salya expressed his sorrow, Karna consoled him.

Karna expressed his view that it was better to fight. If won, he would attain fame. If lost, he would go to heaven. Either way it was better, he felt. He offered propitiating prayers to the cows, Brahminis, noble women, warriors, and his fate.

When he was about to a get into the chariot, Indra came to Karna in the guise of a Brahmin and asked for precious alms. He blessed him to acquire great fame like the sun, moon, Himavan and the ocean. Karna wondered as to why he did not bless him with long life. Then he thought that it was also good as the riches of the kings were fickle like the tongue of the serpent. Only virtues would live even after the fall of the body. He offered him thousands of cows, horses and elephants.

He was even prepared to offer unlimited wealth of gold and his head also. When Indra declined, Karna offered him his earrings and armour that shielded his body and were a part of his being. Indra agreed to receive them. Salya tried to stop Karna. But Karna said that even education would be lost over the years, trees would fall, water would dry up, but what was offered in fire or donated would stay like that only. He removed his armour and earrings and gave them to Indra. Satisfied on accomplishing the work it gods, Indra left to watch the battle between Karna and Arjuna.

When Salya remarked that Indra deceived him, Karna replied that it was Indra who was deceived. He argued that he gratified Indra. Then a messenger arrived from heaven and informed Karna that Indra had sent him a powerful missile named Vimala’. He urged Karna to accept it. When Karna refused, he persuaded him. Karna reluctantly accepted the missile sent by Indra, and asked Salya to take the chariot to where Arjuna was, as he would fight with anger at the defeat of Yudhisthira.

सूत्रधारः
1. नरमृगपतिवालोकनभ्रान्तनारी नरदनुजसुपर्ववातपाताललोकः।
करजकुलिशपालीभिन्नदैत्येन्द्रवक्षाः सुररिपुबलहन्ता श्रीधरोऽस्तु श्रिये वः॥
Sutradhara :
May Lord Vishnu, after perceiving whose man lion form, were stunned men and women, multitudes of gods and demons, who tore open the chest of the lord of the demons (Hiranyakasipu) with his nails as sharp as diamond and who destroyed armies of the demons, give you prosperity.

Nandi :
Nandi is a benedictory verse which is recited at the beginning of the Sanskrit plays. It contains a passage glorifying the favourite deity of the dramatist. It is followed by his prayer for conferring blessing upon himself and the audience. The root नन्द् in Sanskrit means “to be pleased”.

Sutradhara :
Sutradhara means “The stage director”. The word in Sanskrit means staging or per forming.)

एवमार्यमिश्रान्विज्ञापयामि। (परिक्रम्य, कर्णंदत्वा) अये किं नु खलु मयि विज्ञापन व्यग्रे शब्द इव श्रूयते। अङ्ग पश्यामि।

2. संग्रामे तुमुले जाते कर्णाय कलिताञ्जलिः।
निवेदयति सम्भ्रान्तो भृत्यो दुर्योधनाज्ञया॥

Sutradhara : Oh! I got it!
While the battle was being fiercely fought, a servant of Duryodhana taking proper instructions from his master, folded his hands, bewilde-red and conveyed to Karna thus :

भटः – भो भोः! निवेद्यतां निवेद्यतां महाराजायङ्गेश्वराय युद्धकाल उपस्थित इति।

Soldier :
Oh! Oh! Please inform Please inform the king of Anga that the right moment to go to battle has arrived.

3. करितुरगरथस्थैः पार्थकेतोः पुरस्तात् मुदितनृपतिसिंहैः सिंहनादः कृतोऽद्य। त्वरितमरिनिनादैर्दुस्सहालोकवीरः समरमधिगतार्थः प्रस्थितो नागकेतु॥

Sutradhara :
In front of Arjuna’s banner were assembled the mightiest of kings riding horses, elephants and driving chariots, who were equal to a lion in valour, were cheerfully raising a warcry. After hearing it, Duryodhana who has matchless bravery whose banner bears the mark of serpent, proceeded to the battle-filed.

(परिक्रम्य, विलोक्य) अये। अयमङ्गराजः समरपरिच्छदपरिवृत्तः शल्यराजेन सह स्वभवनात् निष्क्रम्येत एवाधिवर्तते। भोः किं नु खलु युद्धोत्सवप्रमुखस्य दृष्ट पराक्रमस्याभूतपूर्वोहृदयपरितापः। एष हि –

(Walks around and looks) Oh! The king of Anga (Karna) well-equipped and prepared for war, is coming this way along with Salya. Oh! I preceive anagony not seen before in the heart of Karna who is the chief person in the festival of war. He-

4. अत्युग्रदीप्तिविशदः समरेऽ ग्रगण्यः शौर्ये च सम्प्रति सशोकमुपैति धीमान्।
प्राप्ते निदाघसमये धनराशिरुद्धः सूर्यः स्वभावसुचमानिव भाति कर्णः॥

Sutradhara :
The wise Karna, who dazzles with lustre, the best among the warriors and the best in the battle-field is advancing sorrowfully. This Karna is like the naturally bright sun enveloped by dark clouds with the advent of Summer.
यावदुपसर्पमि (निष्कान्तः)
I approach him. (Exit)

5. मा तावन्मम शरमार्गलक्षभूताः संप्राप्ताः क्षितिपतयः सजीवशेषाः।
कर्तव्यं रणशिरसि प्रियं कुरूणां द्रष्टव्यो यदि स भवेद्धनञ्जयो मे॥
Soldier :
Oh! Oh! Please inform Please inform the king of

Karna :
It is not possible for the Kings who obstruct my arrows to remain alive. I have to achieve that which will make the Kaurvas happy, if Arjuna comes in my sight.
शल्यराज! यत्रासावर्जुनस्तत्रैव चोद्यतां मम रथः।
O king Salya! Drive my chariot wherever Arjuna is.

భావము :
శల్యరాజా ! అర్జునుడు యెక్కడ కలడో, అక్కడకే నా రథమును తీసుకొని వెళ్ళుము.

6. पूर्वं कुन्त्यां समुत्पन्नो राधेय इति विश्रुतः।
युधिष्ठिरादयस्ते मे यवीयांसस्तु पाण्डवाः॥
పూర్వం కుంత్యాం సముత్పన్నో రాధేయ ఇతి విశ్రుతః ।
యుధిష్ఠిరాదయస్తే మే యవీయాం సస్తు పాండవాః ||
Soldier :
Born to Kunti in the past, I am known as Radheya, son of Radha. In fact, Yudhishtara and other Pandavas are my brothers.

7. अयं स कालः क्रमलब्धशोभनो गुणप्रकर्षो दिवसोऽ यमागतः।
निरर्थमस्त्रं च मया हि शिक्षितं पुनश्च मातृर्वचनेन वारितः॥

The much awaited moment has arrived. The day is also very auspicious. But I have learnt the secret of futile missiles. Besides, my vow to my mother that I would not aim my weapons at Yudhishtara and others prevents me.

शल्यः – ममाप्यस्ति कौतूहलमेनं वृत्तान्तं श्रोतुम्।

Salya : I am also curious to listen to this account.

कर्णः – पूर्वमेवाहं जामदग्न्यस्य सकाशं गतवानस्मि।

Karna : In the past, I went to Parasurama.

शल्यः – ततस्ततः।

Salya : Then?

कर्णः – ततो जामदग्निना मामाशीर्वचनं दत्वा पृष्टोऽस्मि। को भवान्? किमर्थमिहागत इति।

Karna : The parasurama gave his blessing and said, “Who are you? Why did you come here ?

शल्यः – ततस्ततः।

Salya : And then?

कर्णः – ततः भगवान् अखिलान्यस्त्राण्युपशिक्षितुमिच्छमीत्युक्तवान – स्मि।

Karna : Then I replied thus: “Reverred Sir! I intend to learn from you the secret of all missiles.”

शल्यः – ततस्ततः।

Salya :. And then?

कर्णः – ततः उक्तोऽहं भगवता ब्राह्मणेषूपदेशं करिष्यामि न क्षत्रियाणामिति।

Karna : Then the venerable Parasurama said that he would teach only the Brahmins and not Kshatriyas (Warriors).

शल्यः – अस्ति खलु भगवतः क्षत्रियवंश्यैः पूर्ववैरम् ततस्ततः।

Salya : Parasurama has past rivalry with the Kshatriyas. And then?

कर्णः – ततो नाहं क्षत्रिय इत्यस्त्रोपदेशं ग्रहीतुमारब्धं मया।

Karna : I told him that I was not a Kshatriya and began to received instruction from Parasurama.

Salya : And then?

कर्णः – ततः कतिपयकालातिक मे कदाचित् फलमूलसमित् कुसमाहरणाय गतवता गुरुणा सहानुगतोऽस्मि।

Karna : Late once I accompanied by teacher who want to collect fuel stiks, fruits, roots and flowers.

शल्यः – ततस्ततः।

Salya : And then?

कर्णः – ततः स गुरुर्वनभ्रमाण परिश्रमान्मदङ्के निद्रावशमुपगतः।

Karna : Later owing to fatigue which was the result of wandering in the forest, he placed his head on my lap and fell asleep.

8. कृत्तेवज्रमुखेन नाम कृमिणा दैवान्ममोरुद्वये
निद्राच्छेदभयादसह्यत गुरोधैर्यात्तदा वेदना।
उत्थाय क्षतजाप्लुतः स सहसा रोषानलोद्दीपितो
बुद्धवा मां च शशाप कालविफलान्यस्त्राणि ते सन्त्विति॥

Karna : Unfortunately, an insect named ‘Vajramukha’ began to I gnaw my thighs. In order not to disturb my sleeping teacher, I put up with it. When dren-ched with blood, Parasurama woke up. In great fury, he realised that I was not a Brahmin but a Kshatriya. He then cursed me thus: May your missiles fail at the time of operation in the battle.

शल्यः – अहो कष्टमभिहित तत्र भवता।

Salya : The venerable sage spoke very mercilessly.

कर्णः – परीक्षामहे तावदस्त्रस्य वृत्तान्तम् (तथा कृत्वा) एतान्यस्त्राणि निर्वीर्याणीव लक्ष्यन्ते। अपि च

Karna : Now let us test the authenticity of the weapons. (Doing so) these weapons appear deprived of potency.
इमे तुरङ्गमाः गजाश्च दैन्येन स्खलन्तः रणे निवर्तनं निवेद यन्ति। शङ्खदुःन्दुभयश्च नि:शब्दाः।
These horses and elephants faltering with dejection indicate running away from the battle field. The conches and drums have become silent.

शल्यः – भोः कष्टं किं नु खल्विदम्।

Salya : Oh how difficult! What does this mean?

कर्णः – शल्य राज। अलमलं विषादेन।

Karna : O king Salya! Enough of his dejection.

9. हतोऽपि लभते स्वर्गं जित्वा तु लभते यशः।
उभे बहुमतेलोके नास्ति निष्फलता रणे॥

If vanquished, a warrior will go to heaven. If won, attains fame. Both are praise worthy in the world. Hence there is no futility in the war.

अपि च अक्षोभोऽस्तु गो ब्राह्मणानाम्, अक्षयोऽस्तु पतिव्रतानाम्। अक्षयोऽस्तु रणेष्वपराङ्मु – खानां योधपुरुषाणाम्। अक्षयोस्तु मम प्राप्तकालस्य। एषः भोः प्रसन्नोस्मि॥

May the sacred cows and the twice-born be prosperous. May the faithful wives be prosperous. May the warriors who never turn their backs on the battle-field be prosperous. Let me be prosperous as well as whose destined hour has come close. Here I am in a cheerful mood.

10. समरमुखसह्यं पाण्डवानां प्रविश्य प्रथितगुणगणाढ्यं धर्मराजं च बद्ध्वा । मम शरवरवेगैरर्जुनं पातयित्वा वनमिव हतसिंहं सुप्रवेशं करोमि।

I will enter the impregnable battle formations of the Pandavas and capture Dharmaja who is celebrated for his virtues. With my excellent arrows, I will defeat Arjuna and make an entry in the battle- field which then resembles a forest whose King (the lion) is dead.
शल्यराज! यावद्रथमारोहावः।
O King Salya! we are ascending the chariot.

शल्यः – बाढम्। (उभौ रथारोहणं नाटयतः)

Salya : All right (Both pretend to be ascending the chariot).

कर्णः – शल्यराज यत्रासावर्जुनस्तत्रैव चोद्यता मम रथः।

Karna : 0 King Salya! Drive my chariot where that Arjuna is. (नेपथ्ये) (From behind the curtain)

भोः – कर्ण। महत्तरां भिक्षां याचे।
O Karna, I have to beg something very valuable.

कर्णः – (आकर्ण्य) अये वीर्यवान् शब्दः।

Karna : (Having heard) Oh, this voice is very majestic!
श्रीमानेष न केवलं द्विजवरः। आकर्ण्य धीरनिनदं स्वरमस्य चित्रार्पिताङ्गा इव सहसा यान्तो ममैते हयाः।
This young man is not merely a brahmin, He is lustrous. My racing horses immediately became like horses in a painting on hearing his deep sounding voice.
अहूयता स विप्रः । न न। (अहमेवाह्वयामि। भगवन्नित इत:)
You may invite that Brahmin! No, no! I myself will invite him. Oh, Lord, this way, this way please!
(ततः प्रविशति ब्राह्मणरूपेण शक्रः)
(Then Indra enters in the guise of a Brahmin)

शक्रः – भो मेधाः । सूर्येणैव निवर्त्य गच्छन्तु भवन्तः ।
(कर्णमुपगम्य) भोः कर्ण! महत्तरां भिक्षां याचे।)

Indra : O coulds! May you return with the Sun. (Approaching Karna)
O Karna! I beg precious alms.

कर्णः – दृढं प्रीतोऽस्मि भगवान् । I am immensely delighted.

11. यातः कृतार्थगणनामहमद्य लोके राजेन्द्रमौलिमणिरञ्चितपादपद्मः।
विप्रेन्द्रपादरजसा तु पवित्रमौळि: कर्णो भवन्तमहमेष नमस्करोमि।

Karna: I, having feet like lotus already shining brightly with the lustre of gems adorning the crowns of the mighty Kings, feel gratified. The dust of your holy feet has made me holy. Such Karna makes obeis-ance to you.

शक्रः – (आत्मगतम्) किं नु खुल मया वक्तव्यं, यदि दीर्घायुर्भवेति वक्ष्ये दीर्घायुर्भविष्यति । यदि न वक्ष्ये मूढ इति मां परिभवति । तस्मादुभयं परिहृत्य किं नु खलु वक्ष्यामि। भवतु दुष्टम्। (प्रकाशम्) भोः कर्ण। सूर्य इव, चन्द्र इव, हिमवान इव, सागर इव तिष्ठतु ते यशः।

Indra : (to himself) What should I say now? If I wish him long life, he will live for a long time. Otherwise, he will consider me a fool and humiliate me. So, barring these two alternatives, what should be spoken? Yes, I got it. (Aloud) O Karna! May your fame shine constantly like the sun, the moon, the Himalayas and the ocean.

कर्णः – भगवन् किं न वक्तव्यं दीर्घायुर्भवेति।
अथवा एत देव शोभनम्। कुतः

Karna : Why didn’t you wish me longevity? Or else, this wish of yours is fine because.

12. धर्मोहि यत्नैः पुरुषेण साध्यो भुजङ्गजिह्वाचपला नृपश्रियः।
तस्मात्प्रजापालनमात्रबुद्ध्या हतेषु देहेषु गुणा धरन्ते॥

Man should strive hard to attain righteousness in life. The riches of the Kings are as fickle as the tongue of a serpent. Thus one should rule over a kingdom keeping in view only the welfare of one’s subjects but never with a view to enjoy. Though bodies perish, one’s traits make one immortal.
भगवान् ! किमिच्छसि। किमहं ददामि।
Ovenerable one! What do you wish? What can I offer you?

शक्रः – महत्तरां भिक्षां याचे।

Indra : I expect precious alms from you.

कर्णः – महत्तरां भिक्षां भवते प्रदास्ये। श्रूयन्तां मद्विभावाः।

Karna : I will give you precious alms. Please hear about my riches.

13. गुणवदमृतकल्पक्षीरधाराभिवर्षि द्विजवर। रुचिरं ते तृप्तवत्सानुयात्रम्।
“तरुणमधिकमर्थिप्रार्थनीयं पवित्रं विहितकनकश्रृंगं गोसहस्रं ददामि॥

O the best among the twice-born! If you desire, I’ll offer you a thousand cows of the best variety which yield milk comparable only with the nectar, accompanied by their gratified calves, whose horns are adorned with gold.

शक्रः – गोसहस्रमिति । मुहूर्तकं क्षीरं पिबामिति नेच्छामि कर्ण। नेच्छामि।

Indra : One thousand cows! I will drink a little milk for sometime. I don’t want Karna, I don’t want those!

कर्णः – किं नेच्छति भवान् । इदमपि श्रूयताम्।

Karna : Don’t you want them? Hear this as well.

14. रवितुरगसमानं साधनं राजलक्ष्म्याः सकलनृपतिमान्यं मान्यकाम्बोजजातम्।
सुगुणमनिलवेगं युद्धदृष्टापदानं सपदि बहुसहस्रं वाजिनां ते ददामि॥

If you wish, I offer you thousands of horses which are as swift as the horses of the Sun, which are a means to a kingdom, admired by the entire tribe of Kings, born in the illustrious Kambhoja race, virtuous as fast as the wind and valiant in the battles.

शक्रः – अश्व इति । मुहूर्तकमारोहामि। नेच्छामि कर्ण नेच्छामि।

Indra : Horses ? Because I may ride them only for a while. I don’t wish, Karna, I do not wish.

कर्णः – किं नेच्छति भगवान्। अन्यदपि श्रूयताम्।

Karna : O Lord! Don’t you want horses? Then listen to this.

15. मदसरितकपोलं षट्पदैः सेव्यमानं गिरिवरनिचयाभं मेघगम्भीरघोषम्।
सितनखदशनानां वारणानामनेकं रिपुसमरविमर्द बृन्दमेतद्ददामि।

Karna : In that case, I offer you herds of elephants whose cheeks are wet with the constant flow of rut surrounded by bees, as glorious as the mountain ranges, as majestic as the thunder, having brightly shining claws and tusks and which destroy multitudes of enemies in the battle.

शक्रः – गज इति । मुहुर्तकमारोहामि। नेच्छामि कर्ण। नेच्छामि।

Indra : Elephants! I may mount them for a minute.
No Karna, I don’t want.

कर्णः – किं नेच्छति भवान्। अन्यदपि श्रूयताम् अपर्याप्त कनकं ददामि।

Karna : Don’t you want ? Then hear about this as well.
I shall offer you unlimited gold.

शक्रः – गृहीत्वा गच्छामि । नेच्छामि कर्ण। नेच्छामि।

Indra : I will accept and leave. No Karna, I don’t want.

कर्णः – तेन हि जित्वा पृथिवीं ददामि।

Karna : Then I will conquer land and offer it to you

शक्रः – पृथिव्या किं करिष्यामि?

Indra : Of what use is land to me?

कर्णः – तेन ह्याग्निष्टोमफलं ददामि।

Karna : If so, I will offer you the fruit of the sacrifice of Angishtoma.

शक्रः – अग्निष्टोमफलेन किं कार्यम्?

Indra : What can I do with the fruit of Agnishtoma?

कर्णः – तेन हि मच्छिरो ददामि।

Karna : Then I offer you my head.

शक्रः – अविहा अविहा।

Indra : Alas, alas!

कर्णः – न भेतव्यम् न भेतव्यम्। प्रसीदतु भवान् । अन्यदपि श्रूयताम्।

Karna : Fear not, fear not! show mercy. Hear another thing.

16. अङ्गैः सहैव जनितं मम देहरक्षा देवासुरैरपि न भेद्यमिदं सहास्त्रैः।
देयं तथापि कवचं सह कुण्डलाभ्यां प्रीत्या मया भगवते रुचितं यदि स्यात्॥

Then I will offer you my ear-rings and armour which came into being along with my limbs, which cannot be pierced even by the weapons of gods and demons and which protects my body.

शक्रः – (सहर्षम्) ददातु ददातु।

Indra : (Happily) Please give, please give.

कर्णः – (आत्मगतम्) एष एवास्य कामः। किं नु खल्वनेककपटबुद्धेः कृष्णस्योपायः सोऽपि भवतु। धिगयुक्तमनुशोचितुम्। नास्ति सशयः। (प्रकाशम्) गृह्यताम्।

17. शिक्षा क्षयं गच्छति कालपर्ययात् सुबद्धमूला निपतन्ति पादपाः।
जलं जलस्थानगतं च शुष्यति हुतं च दत्तं च तथैव तिष्ठति॥

With the passing of time, the received instruction of forgotten. Even trees which have strong roots fall down. The water in the ponds dries up. But the offerings made in a sacrifice and the charity shine for ever.
(हुत = offering in the fire) पादपः = tree
तस्मात् गृह्याताम् (निकृत्य ददाति)
Thus you take these. (removes them and offers)

शक्रः – (गृहीत्वा आत्मगतम्) हन्त गृहीते एते। पूर्वमेवा विजयार्थ सर्वदेवैर्यत् समर्थितं ” दानो मयानुष्ठिटम्। तसादहमप्यरा वतमारुह्यार्जुनकर्णयोः न्द्वयुदं पश्यामि । (निष्कान्तः)

Indra : (After accepting, to himself) Alas! I have taken. I have done now what the Gods had already planned to do, for Arjuna’s victory. Hence, I will sit on Airavata and watch the battle between Arjuna and Karna (Exits).

शल्यः – भो अङ्गराज। यजितः खलु भवान् !

Salya : O King of Anga ! You were betrayed.

कर्णः – केन?

Karna : By whom?

शल्यः – शक्रेण।

Salya : By Indra.

कर्णः – न खलु । शक्रः खलु मया वञ्चितः । कुतः?

Karna : Not indeed. Indra was deceived by me. Because.

18. अनेकयज्ञाहुतितर्पितो द्विजैः किरीटिमान् दानवसंघमर्दनः।
सुरद्विपास्फालनकर्कशाङ्गुलि र्मयाकृतार्थः खलु पाकशासनः॥

Indra, who is gratified by Brahmins who offer him oblations in the sacrifices, who wears the shining crown, one who annihilated the race of demons and whose fingers became rough by constant patting of Airavatha, was gratified by me. देवदूतः – कर्ण! कवचकुण्डलग्रहणाज्जनित पश्चा
त्तापेन पुरन्दरेणानुगृहीतोऽसि । पाण्डवेष्वेक
पुरुषवधार्थममोघमस्त्रं विमला नाम शक्तिरिय प्रतिगृह्यताम्।

Messenger of the god :
O Kara?! Indra, who repented after accepting your ear-rings and armour, has blessed you. Take this weapon named Vimala’ which can kill one of the Pandavas you wish.

कर्णः – धिक्, दत्तस्य न प्रतिगृहामि।

Karna : What a shame! I do not take anything in return for what I give.

देवदूतः – ननु ब्राह्मणवचनाद् गृह्यताम्।

Devaduta : Take a Brahmin’s words and accept it.

कर्णः – ब्राह्मणवचनमिति। न मयातिक्रान्तपूर्वम्। कदा लभेय।

Karna : A Brahmin’s word? I never disregarded a Brahmin before. When can I get?

देवदूतः – यदा स्मरसि तदा लभस्व।

Messenger of god : You will acquire it when you think of it.

कर्णः – बाढम्। अनुगृहीतोऽस्मि, प्रतिनिवर्ततां भवान्।

Karna : All right. I am gratified. You may return now.

देवदूतः – बाढम्। (निष्क्रान्तः)

नूनं युधिष्ठिरपराजयकोपितात्मा पार्थः करिष्यति यथाबलमद्य युद्धम्॥

I hear the sound of the blowing of a conch which resembles the tumult of an ocean at the time of dissolution. Is it Krishna’s or Arjuna’s? Certainly, Arjuna, furious after the humiliating defeat of Dharmaraja, will fight me with all his might.
