Question 1.
In the story ‘Madam Rides the Bus’, Valli took a bus ride on the bus that she wanted to for last several months. She knew that she had to buy tickets for this. So she saved money suppressing all temptation to buy things like peppermints, toys, balloons, etc., and paid for the ticket.

b) Was the excitement the same on her return journey ?
Discuss with your classmate and write a paragraph based on your discussion on the above mentioned questions.
Answer:
a) Valliammai was a curious, inquisitive and a philomath – a lover of learning. She always wanted to unveil the mysteries and secrets of unknown things. She is a kind of visual learner – tends to absorb information through watching demonstrations, scenes or engaging in hands-on experiences.
While travelling her first voyage by bus she devoured everything with her eyes. She enjoyed watching the bank of a canal, the narrow road, beyond the canal there were palm trees’, grasslands and distant mountains. All were spectacular scenes of nature that made her spellbound and made her blissed and ecstatic.
And on the other side of the road there was a deep ditch and beyond it there were expansive green fields. Unto the distant horizon the land looked green. It was a wonderful scene. For a girl who never comes out of her village it, all looked awesome. On the bus, during her journey she was able to meet manifold variety of human beings. She tasted their wit, sarcasm, satire, honesty and hypocrisy.
What made her elated and amused was the young cow, keeping its tail high in the air, running very fast in the middle of the road right in front of the bus. The driver had to slow down the bus, and sound the horn again and again. But the continuous honking of the horn made the cow frightened and confused and made her to gallop in front of the bus. At last the cow moved off the road and the bus carried on her journey. This was the most amusing incident that made Valli enraptured and made her euphoric.

b) Valli, on her way back, was as equally excited as she had done on her onward journey. She was not bored of watching the same scenery. She was equally excited, elated and amused to watch the wonderful nature. But on her return journey she had to experience a ghastly sight of the dying of the young cow in a dreadful accident in which it had been struck by some fast moving vehicle.
A lovable, beautiful creature just a while ago had now suddenly lost its charm and its life and looked so horrible. It was lying there with her legs spreadeagled with a fixed stare in her lifeless eyes. That sight made Valli so frightened that she overcame with sadness.
Question 2.
Have you undertaken any journey by bicycle, boat, bus, train, or on an elephant back? Share your experience with your friends in the class.
Answer:
Train journeys are super fun, especially when travelling by train with a group of friends. One of my most memorable journeys by train was my journey from Rajamahendravaram to Araku. It was a family trip and we were all really excited about it. We had numerous plans for the trip and were especially looking forward to having a great time on our way.
We all reached the railway station by 11.00 am and the train ride started within a few minutes. I occupied the window seat to see the view outside. The view of the green fields, muddy roads, and huts on the way was delightful. My cousin sat beside me, and we chatted ds we looked outside.

After lunch, we all decided to play antakshari. Playing antakshari in large groups is always fun. Our parents and grandparents also joined us, thereby adding to the fun. We played antkshari for the rest of the journey, and before we even knew it, we had reached our destination. It was a great experience. The company of the members of my family made this train journey all the more gleeful.

Writing
Question 1.
In the text, seeing Valli travelling alone in the bus, some of the characters showed concerns.
An elderly woman asked, “Are you alone, dear?”
The Conductor questioned, “Won’t your mother be looking for you?”
The old woman continued asking, “Is it proper for such a young person to travel alone? Do you exactly know where you’re going in town? What’s the street? What’s the house number?”
Do you think that the concerns of the elderly lady and the conductor are apt and genuine? Will you say that it is applicable to young boys as well? Discuss in groups, make note and then arrange a debate competition. You can consider the following points for discussion or debate. Then write a paragraph considering these issues and give your opinion as well.
- Girls and boys of Valli’s age can travel alone in a bus or auto rickshaw, etc.
- Freedom should be given to them to move around.
- Safety of the young children is of utmost concern.
- What type of education should be given to them?
- This is a vulnerable age and children are innocent.
Answer:
Atrocities against the children are increasing day by day. They are forcefully indulged in various activities such as trafficking, begging, they are being sold just for the sake of money. Physical offences against the girls is a very serious crime which affects them physically, but also mentally.
Since ages, girls have been the victims of one abuse or other. The crimes committed against children are not restricted to any specific age. It happens because of their incapability to appreciate the nature of the offences and their consequences there of.
These offences against the children occur when a parent or guardian or a person in charge of a child either deserts the child without any regard for the child’s safety or welfare.
![]()
Because of the above said facts about the atrocities against the children, we should not allow the girls and boys to travel alone in a bus or in an auto rikshaw etc. Even the writer Vallikkannan symbolically warned the children not to travel alone on the roads – by citing the example of the young cow being knocked down by a vehicle and lost its life. Freedom should not be given to children to move around.
That means that children should be denied of movement but should be allowed to move under a watchful eye of parents. Especially girls should not be allowed to move free since the criminals and abusers can lurk anywhere. If they are to go out, they should be allowed to go in the company of their friends or their siblings.
In the present scenario when the crime rate again the children is increasing day by day safety of the young children is of utmost concern. All children have the right to grow up in a safe environment free from violence, abuse and atrocities. Children should be told to avoid talking to people they don’t know, not to walk away with strangers.
If they have to travel alone, they should sit near other families on the bus or the train. Children should be made to by heart their address, parents’ phone numbers and the phone numbers of the police. The concept of Personal Safety Education which uses a methodology that promotes the safety of self against abuse.
Personal safety empowers children to take part in their own protection by giving them age appropriate information, skills and self-esteem. Personal safety teaches them that their body belongs to them and nobody has the right to touch them in a way they don’t like to understand.
Personal safety teaches assertiveness skills, helping children to stand Up for their own rights. Personal safety builds the support system of each child, including the family, school, community and friends. Children should be taught about three kinds of touches – safe touch, unsafe touch, and confusing touch.
The crimes which are committed against the children are not restricted to any specific age children between the age of 7 and 18 are the most vulnerable and innocent victims of crime. They can be easily targetted and many a time they are being targeted by the known.
Question 2.
You have read that on her return journey, Valli saw the young cow lying dead by the roadside. This young cow was running very fast in front of the bus and had given Valli unbound happiness when she was travelling to the town.
Now, write a paragraph on ‘Should the domestic animals be let loose to walk on the roads freely’ where the vehicles are plying? Who is responsible for the death of the young cow ?’
Answer
The problem of stray cattle is nothing new to road users. Herds of stray cows and buffaloes roam freely on the thoroughfares and roads cause hindrance to traffic. Many people riding two wheelers have been injured after the vehicles skidded because of cowdung on the road.
At night vehicle users cannot spot the animals lying on roads with poor illumination. As we drive outside our urban areas often animals are killed by passing traffic. We might have had the unfortunate experience of striking a large animal ourselves. Early mornings between five and eight, and evening hours between five and ten are the most common times for collisions involving animals.

Animal distractions and risks are brought about by a variety of animals, from small cats, dogs and even birds to the large cattle. The latest data available from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration surveys indicate that there were 2,68,000 vehicle-animal collisions. Of those incidents 13000 resulted in injuries and 204 in fatalities. Hence the domestic animals should not be let loose to walk on roads freely where vehicles are plying.
