Riddle 1
A farmer returns from the market, where he bought a goat, a cabbage and a wolf (what a crazy market). On the way home he must cross a river. His boat is small and won’t fit more than one of his purchases. He cannot leave the goat alone with the cabbage (because the goat would eat it), nor he can leave the goat alone with the wolf (because the goat would be eaten).
How can the farmer get everything on the other side in this river crossing puzzle ?
Answer:
The first step that must be taken is to let the goat go across the river, as any other t actions will result in the goat or cabbage being eaten. When the farmer returns to the original side, he has the choice of taking either the wolf or the cabbage across next.
If he takes the wolf across, he would have to return to get the cabbage, resulting in the wolf eating the goat. If he takes the cabbage across second, he will need to return, to get the wolf, resulting in the cabbage being eaten by the goat. The dilemma is solved by taking the wolf (or the cabbage) over and bringing the goat back: Now he can take the cabbage (or the wolf) over, and finally return to fetch the goat.

Writing
Article Writing
1. ‘Rules are meant to be observed in spirit not only in letter’. Explain what you understand by this statement. Write an article in about 120-150 words on how the rules can be effectively implemented in the society and citizens can follow it in the true spirit. You may use any of the ideas given in the box. Follow the stages involved in the process approach to writing.
a) Use it in the context of gender (protection of women’s rights/dowry/female infanticide, etc.).
b) In the context of environment (cutting of trees/poaching/pollution).
c) Smoking in public/following traffic rules, etc. (add cartoons with fun facts, for example parking in front of no parking sign), d) In the context of value and self discipline.
Answer:
Recently the concept ‘The letter versus the spirit of the law (rule)’ has been gaining importance in society. It explains the relationship between the law, social norms and fairness in society. We are going to highlight a scenario in which the letter of the law or the spirit of the law may be breached. We hypothesize that it may be unfair to violate the spirit of the law,, even if the letter of the law has hot been violated.
Even in the context of environment rules are to be observed in spirit but not in letter. Government has brought many rules to demote deforestation. The Forestation Conservation Act of 1980 aimed at slowing dowp the deforestation caused by the .
conversion of forest lands to non-forest purposes. But with a growing population, we are running out of land to grow crops and keep livestock. For building multipurpose irrigation projects forests have to be cut down in large areas of land. In this context the rules against deforestation are to be violated. Rapid industrialisation, agricultural modernatisation, burgeoning population and other factors are combining in many less developed countries, to damage the natural environment so severely.
Economy and Economics are closely related issues. Development is not possible without adequate emphasis on environmental protection. Development and environment are complementary to each other, helping each other to grow and antagonist terms because one hinders and spoils the other. The more the development, the more the degradation of environment.
The more the development, the more the deforestation. But without these industries, there will be no development in means of transportation, revolution, in communication and network. Thus there is a conflict between environmentalists and developers. The developers say there is no development without environmental degradation.
On the other hand, the environmentalists allege that the developers are destroying the environment. Thus in the course of development we should follow the rules of environmental protection in spirit but not in letter. That does not mean we have the right to destroy forests by taking up deforestation measures.
We have to make up the loss of deforestation by means of afforestation or reforestation methods. In short we have to grow what we have cut. Thus the development and environment are balanced and they lead to prosperity of the country.

Answer:
Story Writing
I was then a 12 year old boy. I did not know how to ride a bicycle. All my friends, brothers and my cousins can ride a bicycle. Even the little children younger to me can ride a bicycle. Some of my classmates can even ride scooters. This made me shy of myself. My friends and classmates used to make fun of me.
They used to humiliate me for not learning how to ride a bicycle. Some of my friends used to suggest me that I should learn riding a bicycle as early as possible. They used to encourage me by saying that it is not a hard task. They promised me they would help me to learn to ride a bicycle.
But 1 am afraid of riding bicycle. I had a feeling that I would fall down and incur injuries. I am afraid of heavy vehicles such as lorries, buses and cars. I would be scared of speeding vehicles. I would always have a feeling they might hit me or run over me. I am not confident of myself.
But one day during summer holidays, my friends forced me to learn riding a bicycle. They threatened that they would cease to be my friends if I didn’t learn how to ride. They gave me confidence by citing so many examples. They told me how even small birds could fly great heights if they were scared of falling down from such great heights. Even animals and birds threw their little offsprings out of huts and dwellings and forced them to fly and run on their own.
Thus they tried to build confidence in me. They tried to explain to me how difficult it would be if we don’t know how to ride a bicycle / vehicle. In this world of dash and dart the life will be impossible without knowing how to drive. There words soothened my fear. I gathered confidence from their words. 1 expressed my acceptance finally. Three of my friends made me learn how to get on and off the bicycle. They made me wear knee and elbow pads.

They selected a flat, smooth, comfortable and low traffic area. They brought a cycle with training wheels. The seat of the cycle is very low so that I was able to balance by stopping myself with my feet. Very soon I was able to learn pedalling, dismount the bike, how to balance, how to change directions etc. Three days continuously they helped me to learn cycling. Day by day I perfected cycling. On the third day I was able to ride on my own. Now I can ride the bicycle with a lot of precision and perfection.
