Part – A

Time : 2 Hrs. 30 Min
Marks : 60

Questions (1 – 4):
Read the following passage.
On the whole, the small, society of Rameswaram was very rigid in terms of the segregation of different social groups. However, my science teacher sivasubramania Iyer, though an orthodox Brahmin with a very conservative wife, was something of a rebel. He did his best to break social barriers so that people from varying backgrounds could mingle easily. He used hours with me and would say, “Kalam, I want you to develop so that you are on par with the highly educated people of the big cities.”

One day, he invited me to his home for a meal. His wife was horrified at the idea of a Muslim boy being invited to dine in her ritually pure kitchen. She refused to serve me in her kitchen. Sivasubramania Iyer was not perturbed, nor did he get angry with his wife, but instead, served me with his own hand and sat down beside me to eat his meal. His wife watched us from behind the kitchen door. I wondered whether she had observed any difference in the way I ate rice, drank water or cleaned the floor after the meal. When I was leaving his house, Sivasubramania Iyer invited me to join him for dinner again the next weekend. Observing my hesitatipn, he told not to get upset, saying, “Once you decide to change the system, such problems have to be confronted.” When I visited his house the next week, Sivasubramania Iyer’s wife took me inside her kitchen and served me food with her own hands.

(My Childhood)

Answer each of the following questions in three to four sentences. (4 × 3 = 12)

Question 1.
What kind of a person was Sivasubramania Iyer ? How was he different from his wife?
Answer:
Sivasubramania Iyer was an orthodox Brahmin. He was a forward-thinking arid rebellious indi¬vidual who actively worked to break down social barriers. He was a kind mentor to Kalam, encour¬aging him to pursue education and rise above the social limitations of Rameswaram. In stark contrast, his wife was a conservative, orthodox Brahmin who strictly adhered to traditional beliefs and rituals, as shown by her refusal to allow a Muslim boy into her ‘ritually pure’ kitchen. This difference highlights Iyer’s progressive nature against his wife’ rigid traditionalism.

Question 2.
“Once you decide to change the system, such problems have to be confronted.” What does this mean ? How does it reflect Iyer’s attitude towards social reform?
Answer:
‘Once you decide to change the system, such problems have to confronted.’ This quote means that one must be prepared to face and overcome obstacles, resistance and difficult situations to bring about systemic change. It shows that Sivasubramania Iyer was committed to social reform and understood that it wouldn’t be easy. His actions, like inviting Kalam again despite his wife’s re¬fusal, demonstrate his resolve. He wasn’t deterred by the problems but he saw them as challenges to be confronted directly to achieve his goal of creating a more inclusive society.

Question 3.
What might have caused Sivasubramania Iyer’s wife to change her mind and personally serve food to Kalam during hi next visit?
Answer:
Sivasubramania Iyers’ wife likely changed her mind due to her husband’s calm and persistent influence. When she first refused to serve Kalam, her husband did not get angry or scold her. Instead, he served Kalam himself and spoke with his wife about the importance of social equality. His gentle but firm stance, combined with the example he set, probably made her reflect on her own beliefs. She likely realized that her actions were not in line with her husband’s progressive values and that her traditions were causing her to be inhospitable. This reflection, spurred by her husband’s respectful demonstration of his beliefs, led her to change her heart and made her realize the narrowness of her perspective, prompting her to serve Kalam herself.

TS 10th Class English Question Paper June 2025

Question 4.
If you were in Kalam’s position during the meal, how would you feel about someone observing you closely and what would you do?
Answer:
If I were in Kalam’s position; being watched so closely by someone from behind the kitchen door would make me feel uncomfortable and self-conscious. It would be clear that I was being judged based on my identity rather than as a peron. I would feel a mix of sadness about the prejudice and empathy for the difficult position Sivasubramania Iyer was in. To handle the situation, I would probably try to remain composed and respectful. I wouldn’t react negatively or show my discom¬fort. I would try to act as normally as possible, focusing on enjoying the meal, and showing gratitude to Iyer. This would demonstrate my own dignity and respect, as well as avoid creating further tension

Questions (5 – 8) :
Read the following Conversation :
Abel : I’ll tell you what I’ve got to do. On Monday next, I’ve got to do three things. I’ve got to go to the lawyer and alter my will; and I’ve got to go to the insurance office and pay my premium and I’ve got to go to St. Philip’s Church and get married.

Ben and Henry: What!

Mrs Jordan : Get married!

Mrs Slater : He’s out of his senses. (General consternation)

Mrs Slater : Who to?

Abel : To Mr Johns horrocks who kepts the ‘Ring-o-Bells’. ‘We’ve had it fixed up a good while now, but I wa keeping it for a pleasant surprise. (He rises.) I felt I was a bit of a burden to you, so I found someone who’d think it a pleaure to look after me. We shall be very glad to see you at the ceremony. (He gets to the door.) Till Monday, then, Twelve O’ clock at St. Philipps Church, (opening the door) It’s a good thing you brought that bureau downstairs, Amelia, It’ll be handier to carry it across to the ‘Ring’ O-Bells’ on Monday. (He goes out.) THE CURTAIN FALLS.

(The Dear Departed)

Answer each of the following questions in three to four sentences. (4 × 3 = 12)

Question 5.
What are the three things Abel wants to do next Monday ? Why does he want to do so?
Answer:
The three things that Abel wants to do next Monday are : (a) to see his lawyer to alter his will, (b) to pay his insurance premium and (c) to marry widow Mrs. John Shorrocks at St. Philip’s Church. He wants to do so because he feels his daughters, Amelia and Elizabeth, are only interested in his property and are treating him as if he’s already dead. By marrying again and changing his will to benefit whoever is with him at his death, Abel is making a statement to his opportunistic daughters and asserting his independence.

Question 6.
How does Mrs. Slater react when Abel speaks about getting married? What do you think of his marriage plant?
Answer:
When Abel speaks about getting married, Mrs. Slater is shocked and upset because she fears that his marriage would deprive her and her sister of his property. Abel’s marriage plan is a direct response to his discovery of his daughters’ greed and hypocrisy. His marriage plan is a wise and bold decision, as it shows that he wants independence and happi¬ness instead of being treated selfishly by his daughters.

TS 10th Class English Question Paper June 2025

Question 7.
Why does Abel decide to get married? Do you agree with his decision.? Explain.
Answer:
Abel was alienated by his daughters. They didnot show any love and concern towards him. They were unconcerned, apathetic and hateful towards him. They valued his property more than him. They ill-treated him. He was vexed with their behaviour. He thought that he was a bit of burden to them. So he decided to get married. Yes, I agree with his decision. He was upset with his daughters’ greed and hypocrisy. He wanted independence and happiness instead of being treated selfishly by his daughters. Their ill-treatment, unconcerned and apathetic attitude towards him, valuing his property more than him forced him to marry at that ripe age.
