Part – A
Time : 2.30 Hours
Marks: 60
Question No. (1 – 4):
Read the following passage.
I looked at father’s bare feet. Never having worn shoes, his feet had developed cracks and somehow resembled those of an elephant. I noticed this for the first time. I hadn’t noticed that the road was uneven. I didn’t have to since I was wearing a pair of hunting boots. I checked my wallet and sawr I still had around Rs. 40 with me. A pair of canvas shoes would cost around Rs. 12 and the remaining amount would be enough for me to get to Bomdila.
My father protested. ‘Give me an old pair. You don’t have to spend money on new shoes. ’I couldn’t convince him to buy a new pair. Reluctantly I gave him the hunting boots 1 was wearing. I then took out my pair of leather shoes from the trunk, and noticed my father’s face lighting up with contentment. Suddenly he looked at me and said. ‘Take care, Write to us……’
Father wanted to say something but the bus started moving. I sawr my father gradually receding into the distance. I saw that the road we had come by looked like a giant motionless rope. Father wrould use the same road to go back home. Simultaneously our journeys started in two opposite directions; with me seated in the luxurious seat of a bus and father walking back with weary legs on the pebble strewn road. (The Journey)
Answer each of the following questions in three to four sentences. (4 × 3 = 12 M)
Question 1.
The narrator says, “Simultaneously our journeys started in twr opposite directions.” How were the journeys different?
Answer:
When the bus started moving, the narrator saw his father gradually receding into the distance. Both of their journeys started in two opposite directions, with the narrator in the luxurious seat of a bus and father walking back with tired legs on the pebble strewn road. The phrase ‘opposite directions’ suggests that both their directions were different. In fact, the son and the father had to travel in opposite directions to reach their destinations.
Question 2.
What were the two things unnoticed by the narrator? Why do you think they had gone unnoticed?
Answer:
The two things unnoticed by the narrator were : i) his father was barefooted and his feet had cracks in them which resembled those of an elephant, ii) The other thing was that the road was uneven, i.e., pebble-strewn-hard to walk on. With this it is implied that the narrator was little bit unconcerned and apathetic about his parents.

Question 3.
Why did the father insist on giving him an old pair of shoes?
Answer:
The father was simple, caring, affectionate and hard-working. Moreover, he was more careful about spending money. He was contended with the old shoes of his son. Therefore, he insisted on giving him an old pair of shoes. Not only that, but he also advised his son not to spend money on new shoes!
Question 4.
“Father wanted to say something but….”
What would father have said if the bus hadn’t started?
Answer:
The father was happy with the old pair of shoes his son had given him. His face lit up with contentment for the generosity his son had shown him. He wanted to express his gratitude but before he could do it, the bus had started. If the bus had not started, it is obvious that father would have expressed his love towards his son.
Question No. (5 – 8): Read the following passage.
“I can remember the time,” she said wistfully, “when all the fields around this village were green and the harvests good”. Her outstretched arm described a complete circle as she stood in the morning sun. “Then they built those monsters, those ….” Her voice spluttered in anger as she shook her fist at a collection of ominous looking black buildings on the horizon, covered in a low-lying shroud of thick smoke. “They said that factories need leather to make shoes, handbags and clothes. They said our menfolk would get jobs. They said we would all become rich.”
We stood silent, each thinking our own thoughts. Yes, they told you all that. But there is so much they didn’t tell you. They didn’t tell you that to change animal skins into leather – which they call tanning – uses as many as 250 different chemicals, including heavy metals such as cadmium, arsenic and chromium, arsenic and chromium.
They didn’t tell you that these chemicals are discharged into the environ ment from the those chimney stacks and fall to earth for miles around, polluting the earth below. They didn’t tell you that this would poison your fields, so that nothing will grow. (A Tale of Three Villages – Ponnimanthuri Village, India)
Answer each of the following questions in three to four sentences. (4 × 3 = 12 M)
Question 5.
What were the “montsters” and “ominous looking black buildings” referred to in the pasage?
Answer:
“Monsters” and “ominous looking black buildings” were mentioned in the passage. “Monsters” referred to big factories and “ominous looking black buildings” meant that they were signs of something bad to happen to the villagers in near future. Broadly speaking, this means that these leather factories would release poisonous gases which would definitely harm not only the entire environment but also the villagers.

Question 6.
What is tanning ? What are the chemicals used in tanning?
Answer:
Changing animal skins into leather is tanning. The process of tanning requires as many as 250 different chemicals to be used. These chemicals include heavy metals such as cadmium, arsenic and chromium.
Question 7.
Can factories be built near residential areas without causing pollution? If yes, how can this be done effectively?
Answer:
Factories cannot be built near residential areas without causing pollution. But if some pre¬cautions are taken, they can be built near residential areas without causing pollution. Firstly, the chemicals released from factories would not be dumped in open fields and into rivers. Secondly, special ash ponds must be provided for the discharged chemicals and they must be far away from the habitations. Greenery should be maintained in and around the factories.
Question 8.
Pick Three TRUE statements according to the passage.
A) Chromium is a heavy metal.
B) The fields were not green before the setting up of factories.
C) Factories need leather to make shoes, handbags and clothes.

Question No. 14.
In the One-act Play “The Dear Departed”, Abel Merryweather gave a shocking announcement that he was going to alter the will giving all his property to Mrs Shorrocks whom he would marry. He felt that she was the one who would think it a pleasure to look after him. Write a narrative about the sequence of events that made Abel Merryweather take the decision about marriage. (10 × 1 = 10 M)
You may use the following details.
His daughter misstook hin to be dead
• Things stolen by the daughter.
• Daughters were planning to divide the property between themselves.
• His realization about false affection of daughters and sons-in-law.
• His decision to alter the will and to marry John Shorrocks to start a new life.
Answer:
Narration:
Mr Abel Merryweather was a seventy two year old man. He had two daughters, Mrs. Amelia Slater and Mrs Elizabeth Jordan, his two sons-in-law were Henry Slater and Ben Jordan. The old man’s grand daughter, Victoria Slater was a girl of ten. The two sisters mistook their father to be dead due to heavy drinking.
Mrs Slater and Mrs Jordan wanted to make a list of the old man’s belongings so that they could divide between themselves. The bits of Mr Abel’s things included a bureau, a clock, insurance money, his gold watch and even his slippers. But ill-luck would have it, neither the daughters, nor the sons-in-law were in a mood of calling a doctor to see if the old man was dead or alive. Thus were they greedy.
They were engaged in planning to divide the property between themselves. It was strange the old man was alienated by his daughters. They did not show any love and concern towards him. They were unconcerned, apathetic and hateful towards him. They valued his property more than him. They ill-treated him in his last years. So Mr Abel, who knew all this beforehand, was vexed with their behaviour.
He realised that he was a burden to them. So he decided to go to someone who felt it is a pleasure to look after him. All these unpleasant developments forced 72-year-old Abel to marry John Shgorrocks to start a new life. This, his decision to remarry was a shocking news to his members of family. They were scared to know that he old man’s property would go to his newly married wife according to the altered will.

Diary Entry
Mqnday, 12th August 20xx
9.30 pm
Dear Diary
The Second World War led to the suspension of the train halt at Rameswaram station. As a result, newspapers had to be bundled up and thrown out from the moving train. This forced my cousin Samsuddin, who distributed newspapers in Rameswaram to look for a helping hand to catch the bundles. I took up this job and earned my first wages in the process. The money thus earned helped me pay my college fees, buy books and the like. I enjoyed this position of helping my cousin as well as earning money. I felt proud of working hard to make money which aroused in me self-confidence. Isn’t it a strange experience?
