Question No. (1 – 4): Read the following passage.
The last time the two friends met, Ray was in hospital, on his deathbed. It was a Sunday and Roberge, true to habit, arrived on the dot at 9 a.m. “He had grown so weak that he looked frail as a child. I did not stay long, and as I was leaving, Manikda said, ‘Bhaloe laglo’ (it was nice). Those were his last words to me,” said Roberge.
One important fallout of this friendship was the establishment of Chitrabani, a communi cation and film institute, the first of its kind in West Bengal, which Roberge founded in 1970 and to which Ray, as a token of friendship, lent his name as co-founder. Ray was in the first governing ^ body and after a few terms readily agreed to be the institute’s adviser. Roberge arranged most of the initial funding from Canadian agencies. “I had no reservations applying for them, for I feel richer countries in the West are indebted to countries like India,” he said.
For 26 years Roberge was the director of Chitrabani and under him the institute not only produced important documentary features, but also became breeding ground for local talent for film-making… (Rendezvous with Ray)
Answer each of the following questions in three to four sentences. (4 × 3 = 12 M)
Question 1.
‘It was a Sunday and Roberge, true to habit, arrived on the dot at 9.00 am.’ Why was it true to habit?
Answer:
Since the beginning of their friendship in 1970 it was an unspoken arrangement between Roberge and Satyajit Ray to meet on the dot at 9 a.m on every Sunday. Even on his last visit to Ray, Roberge met him on Sunday at 9 a.m in the hospital. So Roberge’s last meeting with Ray at 9.00 a.m was true to his habit.
Question 2.
Who do you think was M anikda and how did he re act to Roberge when they met in the hospital?
Answer:
Manikda was non-other than Satyajit Ray. His friends fondly called him Manikda. Though he was on his deathbed, though he was very weak Satyajit Ray responded amicably and told him that their friendship had been very nice at the time of Roberge’s parting him from his last meeting.

Question 3.
I had no reservations applying for them…. What does the writer mean by this statement? Justify.
Answer:
Roberge feels that the western countries are indebted to India because the western countries attained financial, academical, intellectual, philosophical and spiritual gains from India. So Roberge feels that he has no any doubt in applying for initial funding from Canadian Agencies.
Question 4.
What was the outcome of the friendship between Ray and Roberge? How did it become a breeding ground for local talent?
Answer:
Chitrabani, a communication and film institute, was the outcome of the friendship between Ray and Roberge. It was the first of its kind in West Bengal. Question No. (5 – 8): Read the following passage.
“They came on a Wednesday,” said Sunday. “Many, many big lorries. They took all day unloading them. No-one told us what was in them. They gave the Chief a “brown paper bag-I saw him smiling as the lorries drove away. This was five years ago. Then three months ago, one of the brightest boys ‘ in the village – Thomas Agonyo – started university in Lagos. He came home one weekend with a ‘ new Chemistry book, and spent all day looking at the drums and writing things down and talking to himself and shaking his head. We all thought he had gone mad. Then he called a meeting of the village and told us that the drums contained poisonous chemicals. He said they had come from Italy. But I don’t know where that is. Is it in Europe?
Mr. Sunday Nana stopped, frowning, a troubled look on his face, “In the last five years, 13 peo- pie have died in this village, my own elder brother one of them. Tfiey have been in pain, terrible pain. We have never seen deaths like that before. Lots of our children are sick. We have asked the Government to take the drums away, but they do nothing. We have written to Italy, but they do nothing. The Chief says we should move our houses to another place. But we have no money to buy land. We have no choice. We have to stay here. “And they” pointingto the mountain of death in the clearing-“are our neighbours.” (A Tale of Three Villages)
Answer each of the following questions in three to four sentences. (4 × 3 = 12 M)
Question 5.
How did the pyramids of identical drums cause harm to the villagers?
Answer:
The pyramid of identical drums contained poisonous chemicals. They were piled in the form of a high pyramid beside the stream from which the villagers used to get drinking water. The drums got eroded, broken and its poisonous chemicals flowed into the stream and made its water contaminated.. Since it was only drinking water source for the villagers, they brought water from it, drank it and got sick. 13 people lost their lives. They suffered from severe pain and met with pathetic deaths.
Question 6.
Why do you think the drums were sent from Italy to Nigeria?
Answer:
The drums contained poisonous chemicals. The accumulated chemical and hazardous waste was ignitable, corrosive, reactive and toxic. They will have harmful effect on human health or the environment. If the chemical wastes are disposed of into our water ways, it will make their water unsafe for drinking and agricultural purposes. So the governments try to dispose them faraway from their country men so that they will not be effected. That’s why the drums were sent from Italy to Nigeria.

Respected Sir,
I would like to request you to publish the following few lines for bringing an awareness of the need to protect the senior citizens. Sir, elders of our family bring wisdom, calmness, dependability and unconditional love that shapes the future of younger generations. In today’s busy world, we come across families where the senior citizens are either neglected or thrown out of the house or sent to an old-age home. The senior citizens have every right to be free from discrimination.
Elders have a tendency to become less mobile. It is important for older folks to cntinue to be mobile to remain healthy and active. The youngsters should help elders to stay mobile. We have to make the elders feel they are loved; cared and they are wanted by giving them personal care. We should provide them medical care. We should serve them the proper nutritious food. We should engage them in social activities and recreation.
The senior citizens are the intellectual source and guides and counsellors for younger generation. Hence, I request all our youth to safeguard the senior citizens through your esteemed newspaper.
Yours sincerely,
xxxxxxxx.

My story is strange

The darkness gave me the creeps
And I was lying on top of the heap
Somehow I was given to a young guy
Who tossed me in air and made me fly
Then I was given to an old lady
