Answer:
1) Humanbeings would suffer from scarcity of drinking water.
2) Many communicable diseases would spread in the surrounding villages of the lake.

Section – II (3 × 4= 12 M)

Question 4.
Write about the different steps of blood coagulation.
Answer:
Coagulation of blood : Blood forms clots to block the bleeding blood from wounds.

  1. When the blood oozes out from the wound, the platelets release an enzyme called thromboki-nase.
  2. Thrombokinase acts on another substance present in the blood called prothrombin converting it into thrombin.
  3. Thrombin acts on another substance called fibrin, that is present in dissolved state converting it into insoluble fibrin.
  4. The blood cells entangle in the fibrin fibers forming the clot.
  5. The fibrin fibers are attached to the edges of the wound and pull them together.

Question 5.

Answer:
Pancrease

iii) Which hormone deficiency causes dwarfism?
Answer:
Somatotropin

iv) What happes if pituitary gland does not secrete vasopressin?
Answer:
It leads to failure in regulation of absorption of water in kidneys. It results in a disease called ‘diabetes incipidus’in which more frequent diluted urination is occured.

Question 9.
Explain the experimental procedure of the experiment “action of saliva on starch”. Mention the result.
Answer:
Experiment to understand action of saliva on flour.
Aim : To demonstrate the action of saliva on flour.
Apparatus : Test tubes (2), flour, watch glass, dilute tincture iodine, saliva (1 teaspoonful)

Procedure :

  1. Take a test tube half-filled with water and add a pinch of flour to it.
  2. Shake the test tube well till the flour gets mixed
  3. Take a few drops of this mixture in a watch glass and test for the presence of starch by putting a drop of dilute tincture iodine in it.
  4. A bluish black colour confirms the presence of starch.
  5. Now again dissolve a pinch of flour into half-filled water in a test tube.
  6. Now divide the mixture into two equal halves by transferring it to another test tube.
  7. Note that both the test tubes have the same amount of solution.
  8. Add a teaspoon of saliva to one of the test tube and mark. it.
  9. Do not add anything in the other test tube.
  10. After 45 minutes add a drop of dilute tincture iodine solution to test tubes containing the solu-tion.

Observation :

  1. The solution of the test tube to which saliva is added shows colour change as starch is converted to sugar.
  2. There is no colour change in the other test tube to which saliva is not added.

Inference (or) result:
The enzyme salivary amylase in the saliva breaks down the starch molecules into smaller sub-units of sugars.
