Pierre Jean de Beranger was a famous French poet whose poem was translated into English as ‘My Vocation’. Toru Dutt rendered it into English without surrendering the original spirit. Poetry is the speaker’s vocation. It has divine sanction. The speaker is neglected. God orders to seek company in singing – creating poetry. The wealthy and the powerful humiliate the narrator. Destiny’s message is to find dignity in creativity. To survive, the speaker takes up toil. Fate advises to find relaxation in recital.
