Introduction :
The modern Scholar Sri Cheruvu Satyanarayana Sastri adapted this complex epic into a simplified Sanskrit prose (vachana) for- mat to make it accessible to students and general readers. This adaptation is part of larger compilation titled “Kavitha Mayukha”.
Central Theme / Scope of the lesson:
The core of the story is the ‘Nalopakhayanam’ from the Mahabharata.
The lesson is based on the ‘Naishadhiya Charitam’ one of the great mahakavyas (epic poems) of Sanskrit literature. It was com- posed by the poet Sri Harsh. The epic is famous for its scholarly depth, often referred to by the adage “Naishadham Vidvad – Aushadham” (Naishadham is Medicine for scholars.)
If focuses on the pure and legendary love story between king Nala of Nishidha and princess Damayanthi of Vidarbha.
The lesson introduces the heroic virtues of king Nala – his intel- lectual mastery, righteous governance, and charity – and the di- vine beauty of Damayanthi, as well their growing affection for each other.
Objective of the present lesson:
The primary goal is to provide students with exposure to classical literary themes and to enhance their Sanskrit language skills by presenting complex epic content in an easy-to-understand prose style.
THE PESENT STORY OF THE LESSON:
Intellectual Excellence: Nala, the king of Nishadha, was a man of extraordinary intellect. He mastered the fourteen branches of knowledge (chaturdasa vidya), practicing each with great focus. He was well-versed in the vedas, logic, and Grammar.
Cooking Skill: His cooking skills are compared to the Vedas- just as 3 vedas and 6 limbs make 18 vidyas his 6 tastes and 3 cooking methods created 18 types of culinary excellence.
Righteous Governance : King Nala was an ideal who governed his kingdom according to the Principles of Dharma. Under his rule, virtue stood firm on all four pillars. He ensured his subjects were free from the six types of Calamities (It is) like drought, excessive rain, of foreign invasions.
Valor and Fame : His prowess was as brilliant as the sun, and his fame was soothing and white as the moonlight. it is reputation reached every corner of the world, metaphorically described as a white silken garment covering the “maidens of the directions”.
Unmatched Charity: He was a legendary donor. His generosity was so vast that poverty was completely eradicated from his kingdom. The poet suggest that the only reason the golden Mount Meru still exists is that it was physically impossible to divide and distribute, other wise, Nala would have given that away too.
The Beauty and Grace of Damayanthi :
Birth and Wisdom: Damayanthi was the princess of Vidarbha. From her childhood, she grew up in the company of great poets and scholars, becoming a beacon of wisdom and grace.
Legendary Beauty: Her beauty was so divine that it surpassed even the charm of cupid (Mamatha). Her feet were as tender as lotus petals, marked with auspicious signs of royalty.
Devotion to Nala: After repeatedly hearing about king Nala’s virtues from visiting bards and minstrels, Damayanthi fell deeply in love with him. Even without seeing him, the mere mention of his name caused her to thrill with joy.
Resolute Heart: Looking at her own reflection and Nala’s portrait, she decided that he was the only worthy match for her. While her friends discussed various princes/her heart and ears were attentive only to the stories of the king of Nishada.
Conclusion: The lesson portrays the perfect union of two noble souls. It highlights the heroic qualities of Nala and the refined devotion of Damayanthi, proving that they were destined for each other due to their matching virtues and character.

His cooking skills are compared to the vedas. Just as 3 vedas and 6 limbs make 18 vidyas, his 6 tastes and 3 cooking methods created 18 types of culinary excellence.
He ruled with the wisdom of scriptures and the power of the God’s (Dikpalakas)
He was a master of two major shastras (logic and Grammar) and possessed a splendor and prosperity rivaling the cluster of the Guardians of the Directions.

In his administration, he firmly established virtue (Dharma) on all its four pillars.
Truly, the dust raised by his vanguard was so immense that it seemed as though it fell upon the moon, creating the spot (stain) we see today.
This sentense uses a power full metaphor where king Nala’s prow- ess is compared to a blazing fire. The “hot sight” of defeated enemy kings are poetically described as the charcoal that feeds and sustains the fire of his glory. It signifies his absolute dominance over his rivals.
This sentence uses a beautifull metophor where king Nala’s military conquests are compared to a sacred ritual. His fiery valor is the “flame,” and by conquering the world, he is seen as performing a grand worship (Neerajanam) to the Earth. It signifies his undisputed sovereignty over the globe.
By him, all the ‘itis’ (calamities) were prevented on the surface of the earth.
The world ‘itis’ refers to the six types of natural or external calamities that afflict a kingdom (excessive rain, drought, pests like locusts or rats, birds, and foreign invasions). This sentence highlights king Nala’s excellence in governance, ensuring a safe and prosperous life for his subjects by eliminating these threats.
The wives of the defeated kings are described as “deer-eyed” (a mark of beauty) but due to the loss or defeat of their husbands, their eyes were perpetually flooded with tears, metaphorically compared to “excessive rain” (Ativrishti).
“Moreover, his virtuous qualities, which were as white (pure) as the moon, along with the skill of his soldiers and his own greatness, shown brightly everywhere.”
He wove a silken garment out of his ‘fame’ and covered maidens of the directions (all quarters of the world) with it.”
“Moreover, he is one who has conquered his friends (won their hearts), yet he is also the conqueror of his enemies.”
Explanation: This sentence plays with the Sanskrit word ‘Mitra ‘, which means both ‘Friend’ and ‘Sun’.
Mitrajit : He won the affection of his friends/allies, poetically, it also means his brilliance surpassed the sun.
Amitrajit : He successfully defeated his foes.
It hightlights that he was loved by his people and feared by his enemies,

In statecraft, it is said that a king sees through their spies. “Nala was well – informed.
However, he didn’t blindly follow spies, he used his own intellect and critical thinking to make decisions.
The sentence further highlights that his valor (ojas) was as vast as the sun and his fame (yashas) was as soothing as the moon, covering the whole world perfectly.
Making ‘Poverty’ itself poor, he ensured that the script of fate (written on the forehead) that labeled someone as ‘poor’ did not remain true.”
This sentence uses a clever paradox; it says king Nala was so charitable that he made “Poverty” suffer from poverty (i.e. he eliminated it). In Indian tradition, it is believed that one’s destiny is written on their forehead (Lalata lipi). By giving away immense wealth, Nala effectively erased the “destiny of being poor” from his subjects’ lives, making sure no one remained a pauper.
Perhaps, only because this Mount Meru (the golden mountain) could not be divided, king Nala did not give it away in charity.”
According to mythology. Mount Meru is made of solid gold. This sentence is a poetic exaggeration (utpreksha) of Nala’s generosity. It suggests that the only reason the golden mountain still exists is that it was physically impossible to break it into pieces to distribute. Had it been divisible, Nala’s immense charitable nature would have led him to give that away too!
King Nala wondered if the ocean had not turned into a desert (Maru) due to the immense exhaustion of water poured out during his constant acts of charity. He considered such an outcome (if the ocean had dried up) to be his own infamy.
This sentence uses a poetic exaggeration. In traditional Indian charity. Water is poured out to solemnize a gift. Nala gave so many gifts that the amount of water used could have drained of oceans. He was so concerned about his reputation that he felt if the ocean were to turn into a dry land because of his charity, it would count as a failure or a mark of infamy against his name.

Like the splendor of the sun that rise in the company of kavi (venus) and ‘Budha’ (Mercury).
‘Damayanthi spends her time in the company of poets and scholars, attaining great wisdom and enlightenment”.
Thu sun’s radiance appears alongside the planets venus (kavi) and Mercury Budha.
Damayanthi lives among intellectuals and poets, growing in knowledge and stature.
Are her feet softer than the petals of a red lotus ? marked with the auspicious signs of a lotus (Padma – Rekhas), they are worthy of being placed upon the heads of great emperors”.
The poet marvels at the extreme tenderness and beauty of Damayanthi’s feet. In Indian tradition, feet marked with a lotus sign are considered a symbol of royalty and divinity. This sentence suggests that even the most powerful kings would bow down to her, placing her feet upon their heads in reverence.

“Even in her childhood, she conquered the world (with her beauty); she possessed an inexhaustible treasure of grace and charm”.
This sentence highlights that Damayanthi’s legendary beauty was evident from a very young age, making her an object of wonder and admiration for the entire world.

Damayanthi, the princes of vidarbha, after repeatedly hearing about the virtues of the king of Nishada (Nala), whose beauty surpassed even that of cupid became deeply enamored of him.
“And when she observed her own reflection and his (Nala’s) portrait in the mirror ………………..
This sentence describes a moment of self-reflection where Damayanti compares her own legendary beauty with the image of king Nala, contemplating how perfect they would be as a couple. When bards were describing and praising other kings (rival kings).
This describes a scene where Damayanti is with her father, listening to poets describe the virtues of various king from different lands. Despite hearing about many great rulers her heart was already set on king Nala.
She listened to the descriptions of Nala and felt a thrill of joy, with her hair standing on end (horripilation).”
This describes her deep emotional response, the mere mention of Nala’s name or virtues by the bards caused her to experience physical symptoms of extreme happiness and love.
“Even when her friends mentioned Nala’s name during casual stories or conversations, she felt immense satisfaction just by hearing about the king of Nishada.”
