The next day both of them met Nagarjuna. One of them showed the medicine he prepared. The second said that he could not find time to prepare the elixir as he saw a sick man on his way back. He took him to the hospital, and attended him.

Nagarjuna selected the second one as his assistant. The king heard the news. He was surprised.

The king asked Nagarjuna –
“The first one prepared the elixir. The second one did not prepare it. Still you have selected the second one. Why?”

Then Nagarjuna replied – “The second one also knows how to make the elixir. But he could not find time to do so. He was engaged in service. I saw that sick person earlier there. Hence I asked them to go on the main road. The first one saw the sick person. Still he went on his way. He is like a machine. He will work. But he has no inclination for service. How can there be treatment without the intention for service? How can he become my assistant? So I have selected the second one.”

Translation in English

Nagarjuna was a famous alchemist and healer. His fame spread to foreign countries also. He worked in his laboratory day and night. He discovered medicines for many diseases.

Once Nagarjuna told the king –
“O king ! There is a lot of work. I am unable to do everything. I need an assistant.” The king accepted. “Let it be. I will make arrangements. Tomorrow eligible candidates will come. You select one after examining them.” Thus he said.

The next day two young men came. Nagarjuna questioned them about their education. Their academic qualification was the same. Nagarjuna handed over an article to each, and told them separately.

“Take this article home. You make an elixir with it, and bring it. Meet me tomorrow. While leaving, take the main road.”

Both of them were confident – “Nagarjuna will select me.” Next day both of them went. One of them was very happy. He said,

“I prepared an elixir and brought it. Please take a look.”

The face of the second one was sad. Nagarjuna asked him, “Why is your face sad? Haven’t you prepared the elixir”

Second one : No
Nagarjuna : Why

Second one : I was going on the main road. There I saw an old and sick person. His condition was pitiable. I took him to the hospital. I attended him. Hence I did not find time to prepare the elixir. :

Nagarjuna selected the second one as his assistant. The king heard the news. He was surprised. The king asked Nagarjuna –
“The first one prepared the elixir. The second one did not prepare it. Still you have selected the second one. Why?”

Then Nagarjuna replied –
“The second one also knows how to make the elixir.
