Active and Passive Voice

The active voice
Verbs are written with the subject performing the process. (Subject : the noun (or it’s equivalent) about which the sentence is written. It agrees with the verb).

The passive voice
Verbs are written with the subject receiving action expressed by the verb. (Object: the noun (or it’s equivalent) governed by an active verb or preposition)

The active voice is used when the doer of the action is to be made prominent. The passive voice is used when the person or thing acted upon is to be made prominent. The passive voice is generally used when the doer of the action is not known, is not important, or is not to be mentioned. Intransitive verbs cannot be changed into passive sentences.

To change sentences from active to passive voice, the following points must be taken

1. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.
2. The subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence.
3. The past participle of the main verb is used.
4. The past participle of the main verb is preceded by the appropriate form of the verb ‘to be’ (am, is, are, was, were, be, been, being), keeping in mind the number of the subject and the tense of the verb.
   
5. By precedes the agent of the passive voice, if it is necessary.

How to transform Active Voice sentences into Passive Voice sentences ?

Change the following sentences from the Active voice to the Passive voice :

I. Simple Present

Question 1.
Kiran repairs the air coolers.
Answer:
Air coolers are repaired by Kiran.

Question 2.
Sai writes books.
Answer:
Books are written by Sai.

Question 3.
Alex teaches us French.
Answer:
French is taught to us by Alex. (or) We are taught French by Alex.

We expect good books.
Answer:
Good books are expected by us.

II. Present Continuous

Question 1.
Kriti is singing a prayer song.
Answer:
A prayer song is being sung by Kriti.

Question 2.
The boys are eating food.
Answer:
Food is being eaten by the boys.

Question 3.
Rajani is playing the flute.
Answer:
The flute is being played by Rajani.

Question 4.
Sankar and Narayana are watering the plants.
Answer:
Plants are being watered by Sankar and Narayana.

Question 5.
Kamala is drinking milk.
Answer:
Milk is being drunk by Kamala.

III. Present Perfect

Question 1.
The children have broken the window.
Answer:
The window has been broken by the children.

Rajitha has given me a gift.
Answer:
A gift has been given to me by Rajitha. (Or) I have been given a gift by Rajitha.

Question 3.
Sruthi has painted these doors.
Answer:
These doors have been painted by Sruthi.

Question 4.
Chetan Bhagat has written many books.
Answer:
Many books have been written by GhetanBhagat.

I have played Cricket.
Answer:
Cricket has been played me.

IV. Simple Past

Question 1.
The dog killed the cat.
Answer:
The cat was killed by the dog.

Question 2.
Vamsi took some pictures.
Answer:
Some pictures were taken by Vamsi.

Question 3.
Her teacher appreciated her.
Answer:
She was appreciated by her teacher.

Question 4.
Suresh broke the toy.
Answer:
The toy was broken by Suresh.

Habeeb built three houses.
Answer:
Three houses were built by Habeeb.

V. Past Continuous

Question 1.
The tiger was chasing a buffalo.
Answer:
A buffalo was being chased by the tiger.

Question 2.
Renuka was writing a letter to the headmaster.
Answer:
A letter was being written to the headmaster by Renuka. (or)
The headmaster was being written a letter by Renuka.

Question 3.
The teacher was teaching a poem.
Answer:
A poem was being taught by the teacher.

Question 4.
The carpenters were making tables.
Answer:
Tables were being made by the carpenters.

Question 5.
Yashwanth was eating an apple.
Answer:
An apple was being eaten by Yashwanth.

VI. Past Perfect

Question 1.
He had caught many snakes.
Answer:
Many snakes had been caught by him.

The hunter had killed many tigers.
Answer:
Many tigers had been killed by the hunter.

Question 3.
We had finished the home work.
Answer:
The home work had been finished by us.

Question 4.
The police had arrested them.

They had been arrested by the police.

The letter had been sent by Indrani.

VII. Future

Question 1.
Lalitha will watch the movie tomorrow.
Answer:
The entrance test will be written tomorrow by Lalitha.

Question 2.
The teacher will punish you.
Answer:
You will be punished by the teacher.

Question 3.
They will give you the instructions.
Answer:
The instructions will be given to you by them. (Or) You will be given the instructions by them.

Question 4.
He will finish the work in a couple of years.
Answer:
The work will be finished in a couple of years by him.

Question 5.
Ramesh will look into your problem.
Answer:
Your problem will be looked into by Ramesh.

VIII. Future Perfect

Question 1.
He shall have finished his home work by the time you wake up.
Answer:
His homework will have been finished by him by the time you wake up.

Question 2.
She will have completed the work by tomorrow.
Answer:
The work will have been completed by tomorrow by her.

Question 3.
They will have planted the saplings in the fields by the time we return.
Answer:
The saplings will have been planted by them in the fields by the time we return.

By the next year we will have constructed the building.
Answer:
The building will have been constructed by next year by us.

I will have written a few books on this subject by next year.
Answer:

IX. Interrogative Sentences
