AP Inter 1st Year English Communication Skills Syllables

The basic unit of speech is syllable. Though it is very difficult to define a syllable, we can, without difficulty, identify the syllables in a word. Words are made up of one or more syllables. Words like tea, boy, girl, bus, and bill have one syllable each. A word with one syllable is called a monosyllabic words. Words like teacher, pencil and nation have two syllables and are called disyllabic “words. Words like remember and cigarette have three syllables and are called as trisyllabic words. Words like population have four syllables and words Hke examination have five syllables. Words comprising more than three syllables are called polysyllabic words. Usually syllable division is marked with a hyphen. For example, the word steamer is divided as stea-mer, /sti:-mə/ and cigarette is divided as ci-ga-rette, /sɪ-gə-ret/ and so on.
