The problem with the periodization of Indian history that James Mill offers is: He divided Indian history into three periods – Hindu, Muslim and British. This periodisation came to be widely accepted.
- He thought that all Asian societies were at a lower level of civilisation than Europe.
- Hindu and Muslim despots ruled the country. Religious intolerance, caste taboos and superstitious practices dominated the then social life.
- Mill felt British rule could civilise India. He suggested that the British should conquer all the territories in India to ensure the enlightenment and happiness of the Indian people.
- For India was not capable of progress without British help.

Why did the British preserve official documents?
Answer:
The British preserved official documents with the following views-
- One important source of the British administration is the official records.
- The British believed that the act of writing was important.
- Every instruction, plan, policy decision, agreement, investigation had to be clearly written up. Once this was done, things could be properly studied and debated.
- This conviction produced an administrative culture of memos, notings and reports.
- The British also felt that all important documents and letters needed to be carefully preserved. So they set up record rooms attached to all administrative institutions.
- They thought that these documents will be future proofs for smooth administration.

- The information historians get from oldnews papers is according to the views of the mass media. The historian should do proper research and investigation to finalise an issue or a news.
- The news differ from reporter to reporter basing on their perception. Their writings are very narrative and descriptive.
- But the police reports are according to the rules of the departments. The official cannot interpret the record.
- All the information from the police records is through administrative view point.
- The historians should take care in deciding the facts and other things while following the newspaper reports and the police reports. ‘

Can you think of examples of surveys in your world today? Think about how companies get information about what young people enjoy playing with or how then government finds out about the number of young people in school. What can a historian derive from such surveys?
Answer:
Yes, many different surveys are conducted today.
- There are many private surveys through social media and other networks. So the companies get information about what young people enjoy playing with.
- The government conducts Population Census once in ten years in the country. It will be revised every year. Basing on this the government finds out about the number of young people in school.
- A historian can derive the census of the children and their interest in playing- play time, interested games, physical activity etc.

★ Imagine that you are a historian wanting to find out about how agriculture changed in a remote tribal area after independence. List the different ways in which you would find information on this.
Answer:
The different ways in which I would find information-
- I will gather information from the local government records and surveys.
- I will conduct interviews with agricultural staff and the tribal heads.
- I will obtain answers by giving questionnaires to the young people of the tribes.
- I will spent some days with them to know their seasons, changing in habits, crops etc.

1. Devyansh, interviewed my mother Smt. Renduchinthala Bindu Madhavi. She is 35 years old. After the interview I divided her life into three periods. 1. Childhood 2. As a student 3. After marriage, I periodised like this basing on the following facts-
1. She is innocent during childhood and not capable to take decisions of her own.
2. As a student she can think but depends on elders to take any decision for her better future.
3. After marriage she sHifted herself from her birth place to a new place and familv. She enjoyed her childhood as any other child. She visited many places during het
childhood with her grandparents. She is good at her studies. She passed SSC and Intermediate in first class. She has many friends from her school time. She completed her graduation at 21 years of age. She started her career as a HR at 22. She married my dad Srinivas at 28 years of age. She is happy with her family and work.

3. Look at Sources 1 and 2. Do you. find any differences in the nature of reporting?
Explain what you observe.
Answer:
- The first report tells us about the action taken against the mutineers and their suppression. It doesn’t tell us the cause of the mutiny and the condition of the mutineers. This reveals us the government view.
- “The second report tells us about the condition of the police and their problems. It does not tell us the action taken by government. This can be treated as neutral report.
