This lesson ‘The Treasure within’ presents the interview between Mr. Bela Raja, editor of Sparsh, a newsletter from the Resource Centre, The Valley School, Bangalore and Mr. Hafeez Contractor. one of India’s leading architects. We can know fully of Hafeez Contractor by understanding the interview. The essence of the interview brings out the following facts about Hafer Contractor.
Since he entered school, Hafeez loved doing thỉgs. He was not interested in languages. Mathematics appeared difficult for him to learn. He did not like mechanical learning. He had nightmares about a mathematics examination. He used to copy the material either of his classmates or in the books.
He was fond of playing games. Though his teachers caned him, he did not mind it well as he wished to run on to the playground as quickly as possible. He was the senior champion for many years. He was also the captain of his school cricket team.
One day, while he was in his 11th standard, his principal called him and told him that he had known him since day one. The principal said that he liked Hafeez as he was a good student but at the same time felt sorry for his lacking interest in academics. He told Hafeez that he had hitherto taken care of him but could do the same no lon cer. I also said that his mother had worked hard for the payment of his school fee.
Finci, the principal said that it’s time Hafeez rose to the occasion. As a result, Hafeez went for prayers from then onwards and did nothing but eating and studying. He got 50 % marks in his S.S.C. One day Hafeez created a distraction in the class. For one whole hour, he played with some of his classmates the game ‘Chor Police’. After school, by means of some influence, Hafeez joined in Jaihind College. There he had to study French. So as to learn French well, he met his cousin whose husband was an architect. He went to his office to learn French.
One day in that office, looking at a window detail being drawn by somebody, Hafeez told him that he was drawing wrong. Hafeez also proved why it was wrong. The architect who had observed that, advised Hafeez to join architecture. The prineipal of the college for architecture told Hafeez that she would let him appear in the entrance examination. Hafeez got A* grade in that exam. After that, he never looked back. At school, his teacher saw some sketches drawn by Hafeez. So she advised him to become an architect.
According to Hafeez Contractor, putting many things together and making a sketch is mathematics.
Today Hafeez has his own firm. Having over 350 employees including senior associates, architects, interior designers, draftsmen, a civil engineering team and architectural staff.
