Answer:
6 July, 20xx.
Wednesday 9 p.m
Dear Diary,
Today something strange and interesting happened in my house. Mr Framton Nuttel whose sister I know came to meet me. I was then upstairs. I was busy with some work and so I could not make my presence before him at once. Luckily, my niece Vera who is talkative and can please the guest with her nice talk was there. She talked to him until I came down to meet him.
I apologized to him for being late. Then I showed him the open window and told him that my husband and two brothers who had gone out for shooting with the dog into the marsh, would come back through that large open window. I observed him looking at the window anxiously. I couldn’t understand the cause of his anxiety. Later instead of listening to what was saying, he began telling about himself. I understand he is interested only in telling about himself but not in others’ matter.
When I saw my husband and brothers coming along with the dog towards the window, I cried happily. Then he turned and looked at them. At once, he rushed out. I don’t know the cause of that sudden action. I felt sorry because he had said neither sorry nor goodbye while leaving. I am doubtful if he thought of the men to be ghosts. My niece told me that he was afraid of the dog that was coming along with the men as he had a fobia of dogs.
Mrs Sappleton
7. a) Framton Nuttel wanted to write a letter to his sister explaining all that had happened in Mrs Sappleton’s house.
Imagine yourself to be Framton Nuttel and write the letter.
Answer:
Pendine Street, Dear Sister, You know well the purpose of my staying in the countryside. You have given me letters of introduction to people who you know here and ask me to meet them to have some pleasant talk with them so that I come out of jny nervousness soon. As such, yesterday I went to the house of Mrs Sappleton. By the time I entered the hall of her house, she was upstairs and so I had to wait for her for sometime. But luckily, there I saw her niece, Vera. On being asked who I am, I told her about myself and my purpose of coming to that house. She is a very interesting girl. But instead of telling me something that amuses, she asked me to look at a large open window. She told me that some tragedy had happened in that house. She said that three years back, the husband and two brothers of Mrs Sappleton had gone out through that large open window for hunting some birds with their dog. But they had never returned home. It was understood that they were swallowed up by the marsh. Later Vera told me that Mrs Sappleton did not believe them to be dead. Instead, she said that the men would surely come back. They would come back through that large open window and so she kept that window open every evening till it was dark. I agreed with Vera to her opinion that they were dead. Later Mrs Sappleton came to me. She said that the window was kept open because her husband and brothers would soon come back through that window along with their dog. I wondered how she was able to say that as they were dead. After sometime, she suddenly cried out that the men were coming across the lawn towards the window with the dog following them. That frightened me and 1 turned and looked. I saw the men coming towards the window. I was afraid that they were ghosts. So, immediately I rushed out of her house with all my strength. Yours affectionately, |
b) Write a script for a speech on the position of the disabled people in the society, keeping in mind the great personalities who were disabled but managed to reach the high/ remarkable positions.
Answer:
Respected headmistress, respected teachers and my dear friends ! Good morning to all of you. I feel very happy to stand before you for expressing my views on the position of the disabled people in the society.
It is unfortunate to note that most people think that the disabled people are sufferes of unhappiness in life. But I don’t agree with them. In fact, though they are disabled, they have some special abilities which normal people do not have. Their willpower is great. They never seek the sympathy of others. With strong determination they are able to reach considerable heights in life. You might have come across some instances regarding this. I would like to mention some. There were the disabled like Helen Keller, Sudha Chandran, Nick Vujicic and Stephen Hawking who stood inspiration to the other disabled people. Their lives would astonish everyone of us.
Stephen Hawking suffered from a form of paralysis that confined him to a wheelchair. What he spoke would be in the form of a computer. But he became a great astrophysicist. Sudha Chandran had her leg amputated after she had met with a road accident. But with a strong will-power, she was able to come back to the world of Bharatanatyam with an artificial leg. She gave splendid performances all over the world with her Jaipur foot. Nick Vujicic is a torso. But he has become a great motivational speaker. He could swim, write and pick up things and lead a normal life. So my sincere appeal is – never discourage the disabled. Support them.
Thank you all for providing me with this opportunity.
