Stas and His Horns

There lived a stag in a jungle. One day he went to a pond to drink water. In the clear waters of the pond, he saw his reflection. He saw his horns and felt proud of them. Then he saw his legs, which are very thin and ugly and became upset. Then suddenly there came some hunters to kill the stag. Seeing them, the stag started running and tried to hide in the bushes but couldn’t because his horns were stuck in the bushes. He was terrified as the hunters were very close behind him.

Somehow he got released his horns from the bushes and ran fast and at last saved his life. Then he realised how wrong he was thinking bad about his legs, which really saved his life. And the horns which he thought were beautiful, really would have caused his death.
Moral : Every thing has its own importance.

Gopal and the Hilsa Fish Summary in English

The lesson is all about the season of hilsa-fish and challenge won by Gopal, the wisest of the courtiers in the king’s courtship. It was the season of hilsa-fish and all around, everyone was talking about hilsa-fish. In the market, the fishermen were selling the fish at lower prices as the fish was being ’ caught in very huge quantity. The people all around the kingdom were busy talking about the quality, quantity and prices of the hilsa-fish.

Even the palace of the king was not devoid of all this discussion. The king lost his temper, one day, when a courtier was discussing about a huge hilsa-fish, he caught. Later, realizing his mistake, he apologised and said may be no one, not even, Gopal, the wisest could stop anyone talking about hilsa-fish. But Gopal said that he could. Then the king challenged Gopal to buy a huge fish and bring it to his palace without anyone asking about it.

After a few days, Gopal was found dressing in a different manner by his wife. He half shaved himself, smeared his face with ash and wore torn clothes. When she questioned him of his dressing, he just replied that he was going to market to buy a hilsa- fish. His wife and also the people who saw him on the road and at the market, laughed at him and thought that he was gone mad.

After buying the fish, he reached the palace where he was not allowed inside being not recognised due to his strange attire Gopal suddenly started singing loudly and dancing. Hearing the voices outside, the king asked soldiers to bring the man inside. The other courtiers recognised him and; started commenting. The king, who was surprised, asked Gopal why he was in that manner.

Then Gopal showed the hilsa-fish and said he bought it and came all the way to the palace, without none being questioned about the fish but just talking about his appearance. The king felt very happy and congratulated Gopal over his wisdom and success. Gopal proved that anything that seems to be impossible can be achieved with the help of wits and common sense.
